Frybread Fest Celebrates Indigenous Culture in Downtown Portland

Portland, Ore. – More than a thousand residents and visitors packed Director Park in downtown Portland on Saturday for the third‑year Frybread Fest. Organized by Downtown Portland Clean and Safe in partnership with Miss Indian Northwest, the free‑admission event highlighted Indigenous voices, creativity and community during Native American Heritage Month.

Food, Tradition and Family

Chef Alexa Numkena‑Anderson, owner of Javelina Indigenous Dining, served her signature frybread from a bustling vendor booth. “A lot of people like frybread. So, it’s really easy to get people to come out for it,” she said. Numkena‑Anderson explained that the dough is a simple mixture of flour, yeast, sugar, a pinch of salt and water, modeled after the recipe her grandmother used.

Beyond its delicious taste, frybread carries a complex history. “It was formed out of government rations that were given to Native Americans who were taken off their land,” Numkena‑Anderson noted, reminding attendees of the resilience behind the dish.

Arts, Crafts and Entrepreneurship

More than 25 Indigenous artists and makers set up booths along the park’s perimeter, offering handmade skirts, jewelry, paintings and other crafts. “Native people, Indigenous people, are very commonly artistic people and also entrepreneurs,” Numkena‑Anderson said, emphasizing how the festival provides a platform for local creators to share their work and stories.

Rebecca Kirk, executive director of Miss Indian Northwest, described the festival’s purpose: “Frybread Fest came to be from an ambassador who really wanted to shift the focus from the negative history of Thanksgiving and focus on what Native people are doing now and all of their beautiful glory.” She added that the turnout shows how far Indigenous communities have come, noting, “It’s an honor to see the turnout because it shows me that we have come so far in our history and that we are getting to a really good place where Native people are finally being seen as human.”

Community Reactions

Attendees Brenda and Araceli expressed their appreciation for the event’s family‑friendly atmosphere. “I just like being here, supporting the Indigenous communities in the area and learning more,” they said. “It was really fun, and I enjoyed the frybread. So I needed to come back this year.”

The festival also featured live music, cultural demonstrations and storytelling sessions, creating a vibrant space for education and celebration. Organizers hope the event will continue to grow, offering future generations a chance to experience Indigenous traditions firsthand.

Looking Ahead

With strong community support and a successful turnout, Frybread Fest is poised to become a staple of Portland’s cultural calendar. Organizers plan to expand vendor opportunities and add more interactive programming for families in the coming years, reinforcing the city’s commitment to honoring Indigenous heritage and fostering local entrepreneurship.
