Austin College students honor local history by cleaning Woodmen Circle Home Cemetery

On Saturday, a group of volunteers from Austin College gathered at the historic Woodmen Circle Home Cemetery in Sherman, Texas, as part of the college’s annual Great Day of Service. The students, guided by faculty and local historians, focused on cleaning headstones and trimming the overgrown grass that had begun to obscure the gravesites.

Preserving a unique piece of women’s history

The Woodmen Circle Home Cemetery is more than a resting place; it is a tangible reminder of a nationally recognized women’s organization that offered fellowship and support during difficult times. The cemetery holds the remains of women who contributed to their communities and to the broader mission of the organization, making its preservation a matter of both local pride and historical significance.

Volunteer effort and community impact

Students worked in small teams, using gentle cleaning solutions and soft brushes to restore the stone markers to a legible condition. Overgrown vegetation was carefully trimmed back, revealing the layout of the burial plots and allowing visitors to pay proper respect. The effort not only improved the aesthetic appearance of the site but also helped protect the stonework from further weathering.

Recognition with Texas Historical Markers

In recent weeks, the cemetery was awarded two Texas Historical Markers, acknowledging its cultural importance and the role of the women’s organization in Texas history. The markers provide educational context for visitors and underscore the need for ongoing stewardship.

College’s commitment to service

Austin College’s Great Day of Service program encourages students to engage with the Sherman community through hands‑on projects that address local needs. This year’s cemetery restoration aligns with the college’s mission to develop responsible citizens who value faith, family, and liberty, while also fostering a sense of civic responsibility.

Looking ahead

College officials hope the project will inspire continued care for the cemetery and other historic sites in the region. They plan to schedule additional service days throughout the year, inviting new volunteers to help maintain the site and share its story with future generations.

Local residents expressed gratitude for the students’ dedication, noting that the restored cemetery now offers a dignified space for families and history enthusiasts alike.
