Pat Tillman’s Legacy Inspires Thousands at Annual Pat’s Run in Tempe

Tempe, Ariz. – Each spring the city’s streets fill with runners, families, veterans and volunteers who gather for Pat’s Run, a 4.2‑mile walk‑run that celebrates the life of former Arizona State star and Army Ranger Pat Tillman. The event, now drawing roughly 30,000 participants, showcases how Tillman’s commitment to service, education and character continues to shape the community.

From football fields to the battlefield

Pat Tillman rose to fame on the football fields of San Jose, California, before starring at Arizona State University and later with the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, he left a lucrative contract and a new marriage to enlist as an Army Ranger. Tillman was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004, but his legacy endures through the Pat Tillman Foundation, which he and his widow, Marie, founded in 2008.

Pat Tillman Foundation and scholars

The foundation’s Tillman Scholars program now supports more than 1,000 emerging leaders—doctors, scientists, entrepreneurs and educators—who embody Tillman’s drive for knowledge and service. Notable scholars include former Shreveport mayor Adrian Perkins and NASA astronaut Jonathan Kim. As foundation CEO Katherine Steele, a Tillman scholar herself, explains, “They see a problem and they want to run towards it and try to solve it.”

Pat’s Run: a community celebration

Pat’s Run began in 2005 with 5,000 participants and has grown into a statewide tradition. Satellite runs in more than 30 locations bring together blind runners, amputees, parents with strollers, firefighters in full gear, disabled veterans and everyday citizens who push themselves in Tillman’s honor. The main course ends inside Arizona State’s football stadium, where scholars lead the crowd across the finish line.

“They come to feel part of a community of people that lost something, but also to honor his story and his legacy,” said Tillman scholar and corral leader Amber Manke.

Physical tributes across Arizona

Statues of Tillman stand at Arizona State’s Mountain America Stadium and at State Farm Stadium’s Pat Tillman Freedom Plaza, where Cardinals fans touch the bronze figure before games. The Mike O’Callaghan‑Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge over the Hoover Dam also bears his name, linking his memory to a landmark of American engineering.

Personal impact on families

Even young children feel Tillman’s influence. Eleven‑year‑old Tillman Okrepkie of Santa Rosa, Calif., proudly wears his namesake’s jerseys and shares the story of Pat’s sacrifice with friends. “When I say Tillman, people act surprised and congratulate me on having a really good name,” he said.

Continuing the mission

Mary Tillman, Pat’s mother, reflects on her son’s lasting impact: “Pat made mistakes, but he tried to learn from them. He was harder on himself than on others, and he never took for granted the people who put effort into him.” She adds that, had he lived, Tillman would likely still be solving problems for others.

The foundation’s annual fundraiser, Pat’s Run, not only honors a fallen hero but also raises critical support for scholarships, leadership development and community service projects that keep Tillman’s values alive across the nation.
