First Alliance Church in Lexington welcomed the African Children’s Choir for a vibrant performance that combined traditional Ugandan drumming, a cappella harmonies and lively dance. The 18‑member group, composed of ten girls and eight boys from Uganda, sang and moved the audience while sharing the purpose behind their music.
Music with a mission
Choir Director Tina Sipp explained that the ensemble’s goal extends far beyond entertainment. “These children come from vulnerable circumstances, but they have not let that define their future,” Sipp said. The program aims to give children access to education and new opportunities through the arts.
According to Sipp, many of the children did not speak English as recently as February. Since then, they have enrolled in school, reached a third‑grade level and learned an 80‑minute performance in a second language. The rapid progress demonstrates how music can open doors to learning and personal growth.
Impact on families and the community
Four of the adult chaperones traveling with the choir were former members themselves, illustrating the lasting influence of the organization. “You get to see the results of the investment people have made over the years,” Sipp noted, calling it a beautiful piece of the choir’s story.
Over its 42‑year history, the African Children’s Choir reports having helped educate more than 54,000 children worldwide. Sipp emphasized that supporters do not need to give large sums to make a difference. “It doesn’t matter if you give $5 or $500; it’s the chance to be involved in the life and trajectory of a real person,” she said. The Lexington audience left with more than a memorable concert; they witnessed a tangible example of how faith‑based outreach and community support can transform lives. The choir’s message resonated with local families, many of whom see the performance as a reminder of the power of compassion and education.
