Arizona point guard Dionna Gray, who spent four seasons playing under associate head coach Todd Starkey at Kent State, returned to the court as a graduate‑assistant before receiving a rare fifth year of eligibility. The opportunity to re‑join a team sparked her decision to travel from Ohio to Tucson.
Why Gray came back
“As a graduate‑assistant I was watching these girls compete every day and I missed the team aspect,” Gray explained. When Coach Becky Burke reached out, noting Gray’s competitive drive and willingness to learn, Gray said she “had to jump on it.”
Eligibility and quick transition
Gray’s eligibility was granted on Sept. 23, and she arrived in Tucson late Thursday, completing a physical and beginning practice on Saturday. She switched her graduate studies to political science to accommodate the seven‑week session at Arizona.
Coach Burke’s confidence
Burke, who previously coached against Gray at Buffalo, described the hiring process as “a full job interview.” After Gray’s first practice, Burke praised her, saying she “controls tempo, guards, talks, and is an energy kid” and that he trusted her immediately.
Team integration
Gray noted the Wildcats’ offensive system allows all four guards to play any position, and she is eager to learn multiple roles. She also highlighted the welcoming locker‑room atmosphere, crediting the existing players for making her transition smoother.
Legal involvement
While pursuing her basketball career, Gray became involved in an Indiana lawsuit concerning athlete eligibility, consulting with teammates and agents before joining the Wildcats.
Gray’s addition bolsters Arizona’s point‑guard depth as the Wildcats prepare for upcoming conference play.
