On Saturday, the heart of downtown Bolivar became a place of remembrance as community members gathered for the dedication of Monument 250. The new stone monument, placed on the town square, bears the names of the men and women from Polk County who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
High school senior leads the project
The driving force behind the five‑year effort was Bolivar High School senior Asa Murray. Murray organized the research, fundraising and coordination needed to bring the memorial to life. At the ceremony he said, “It’s not about me. It’s about the names that are on the monument. You may not know who they are, but their names will live forevermore.”
Former governor joins the celebration
Former Missouri Governor Mike Parson attended the event and presented “Monument 250” challenge coins to each veteran present. Parson praised Murray’s dedication, noting, “For some kid five years ago to decide he was gonna take on a project that took over five years to accomplish… I mean, it just makes you proud and humbled to be a veteran.”
Community response
Local residents expressed gratitude for the new landmark, describing it as a lasting tribute to the sacrifices of their forebears. Many veterans in attendance shared stories of camaraderie and service, underscoring the monument’s role in keeping their histories alive for future generations.
What the monument represents
Monument 250 not only lists names; it serves as an educational tool for students and visitors, reminding them of the cost of freedom. The project reflects Bolivar’s strong sense of family, faith and patriotism—values that have long defined the community.
Looking ahead
The dedication marks the beginning of ongoing efforts to maintain the site and incorporate it into local school curricula and veteran‑focused events. Organizers hope the monument will inspire future projects that honor other aspects of Bolivar’s heritage.
