BOONE COUNTY, Mo. – A tragic traffic collision on U.S. Route 40 claimed the life of a Glasgow resident on Thursday evening. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident occurred just after 5:45 p.m. east of Rocheport Gravel Road.
Sequence of events
Troopers reported that an SUV, driven by a 75‑year‑old man from Clark, Missouri, was traveling eastbound when it struck a deer in the roadway. The impact propelled the animal across the highway into the westbound lane, directly into the path of a Jeep driven by a 40‑year‑old man from Glasgow.
The deer struck the Jeep’s windshield and roof, entered the passenger compartment, and collided with the driver. The force of the impact caused the Jeep to veer off the road, strike trees, and come to a stop. Emergency responders pronounced the Jeep driver dead at the scene.
Other vehicle and injuries
The SUV that initially hit the deer continued eastward and was able to come to a controlled stop without any reported injuries to its driver.
This crash marks Troop F’s 56th fatality of 2026 and the first fatality recorded for the month of November.
Safety reminders
State officials remind motorists traveling rural highways, especially during dusk and dawn, to remain vigilant for wildlife. Deer are most active during these times, and collisions can result in severe injuries or fatalities not only to the animals but also to drivers and passengers.
Drivers are urged to reduce speed in areas with known deer activity, use high‑beams when appropriate, and be prepared to brake suddenly. If a collision with an animal occurs, it is safest to remain in the vehicle until help arrives, unless the vehicle is in immediate danger of fire or further impact.
Investigation
The Missouri State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. No charges have been filed, and the incident is being treated as a tragic accident caused by wildlife.
Community members are encouraged to report any hazardous wildlife sightings to local law enforcement to help prevent future incidents.
