Honest Burgers and Zero Pretense at Honest Abe’s Rival

People assume a bakery called Goldenrod Pastries is going to be precious about it. Small plates arranged just so, a chalkboard with six rotating items, out of everything by nine. That’s not what happens when you walk into the South 48th Street shop on a Saturday morning.

Goldenrod has been around since 1949, which already sets it apart from the wave of boutique spots that have opened in Lincoln over the last decade. The building looks like what it is: a bakery that has been feeding the same neighborhood for generations. The sign out front is the same script it’s always been. The cases inside are full — not curated, full — and the staff moves with the specific efficiency of people who have been doing this long enough that nothing flusters them.

What I go for, every single time, is the frosted sugar cookie. I know that sounds anticlimactic. But Goldenrod’s sugar cookies are one of those things Lincoln locals treat as a baseline fact of life — the way you might feel about a particular lake or a certain stretch of road — and I think that familiarity causes people to stop actually tasting them. The frosting is thick and not too sweet, the cookie itself has just enough give, and the whole thing costs somewhere around two dollars. It’s one of the better two-dollar decisions available in this city.

The cake operation is the other thing worth knowing about. Goldenrod does custom cakes, and if you’ve lived in Lincoln for any length of time, you’ve probably eaten one at someone else’s birthday party without realizing where it came from. The decorating is old-school in the best sense — not minimalist, not deconstructed, actual roses and careful piping. Prices vary depending on size and what you’re after, but a standard sheet cake runs well under what you’d pay at a grocery store bakery with half the craft.

The shop sits on the edge of the College View neighborhood, southeast of downtown, which is a part of Lincoln that people who didn’t grow up there sometimes overlook. College View has its own rhythm — Union College is nearby, the streets are quieter, the housing stock is older — and Goldenrod fits into that without calling attention to itself. It’s not trying to be a destination. It just is one.

Go on a weekday morning if you want to browse without distraction. Saturdays get busy, especially if there’s a holiday coming up. They do a substantial holiday cookie business, and around Christmas and Easter the cases get even more elaborate. The staff is not particularly chatty in the way that some newer spots perform warmth, but they’re efficient and they know their product. If you ask what’s good, they’ll tell you plainly.

What Goldenrod has that newer bakeries are still working toward is a complete absence of self-consciousness. There’s no story on the wall about the founder’s vision. The coffee is basic and that’s fine. The point is the pastry, and they’ve had seventy-five years to get it right.
