Sturgis, S.D. – The Sturgis City Council voted Monday night to confirm Mayor Rod Bradley’s appointment of Dawn Christenson as the city’s next finance officer. Christenson, who has served as Meade County auditor since November 2025, brings more than two decades of accounting and local‑government experience to the role.
Extensive public‑finance background
Before becoming county auditor, Christenson worked as a deputy auditor and chief deputy auditor, handling budgeting, financial reporting, property‑tax administration, and election oversight. She also spent time with Ketel Thorstenson in Spearfish and accumulated over 15 years of service with the Big Sioux Community Water System in Egan.
Transition plan
Christenson will assume the title of finance officer designate on Nov. 9. Current finance officer Ann Bertolotto will remain in place through Dec. 11 to facilitate a smooth handover. Christenson submitted her resignation as Meade County auditor in September, with her final day slated for Nov. 6.
Role and responsibilities
As finance officer, Christenson will oversee Sturgis’s municipal finances, assist with budget planning, and work closely with city leaders on financial reporting and the management of public funds. The appointment reflects the council’s commitment to maintaining strong fiscal stewardship for the community.
The council’s decision underscores the importance of experienced, local‑government professionals in safeguarding the city’s financial health.
