Lake County, Fla. — The Lake County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the death of Amazon driver Jaylene Vargas Gonzalez was ruled an accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Deputies responded to a 911 call on Aug. 10 at about 7:22 p.m. after a neighbor reported an Amazon delivery van parked outside his home for several hours.
Investigation and response
When deputies arrived at the address on Clark Road, they found Gonzalez unresponsive inside the vehicle. Lake County Fire Rescue and EMS were dispatched to the scene and transported her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to a nearby resident, Patrick Miranda, “the male officer that pulled her out began coughing for some reason. Once they were worried about fumes inside the vehicle, they pulled her further away from the vehicle and then fire utilized a hose to rinse down the person.” The sheriff’s office indicated that carbon monoxide fumes were present in the van, leading to the fatal toxicity.
Amazon’s response
Amazon issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the incident. “We’re deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the driver’s loved ones during this difficult time,” the company said. Amazon also noted that it is cooperating fully with local authorities in their investigation.
Public safety reminder
The incident underscores the dangers of carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas that can accumulate in enclosed spaces. Residents are urged to ensure that vehicle exhaust systems are functioning properly and to avoid leaving engines running in enclosed areas. Local fire officials recommend installing carbon monoxide detectors in homes and garages as an added precaution.
Lake County officials have not indicated any broader safety concerns related to Amazon’s fleet operations, but the sheriff’s office will continue to review the circumstances surrounding the death to determine if any additional safety measures are warranted.
Community reaction
Neighbors expressed shock and sympathy for Gonzalez’s family. Many highlighted the importance of community vigilance, noting that the 911 call that prompted the deputies’ arrival likely saved lives by alerting authorities to a potentially hazardous situation.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office thanked the public for their cooperation and reminded citizens to report any suspicious or abandoned vehicles promptly.
