Minnesota Hunters Must Follow New Blaze Orange Requirements This Weekend

As Minnesota’s firearms deer season opens this weekend, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging hunters to double‑check their safety gear. Under Minnesota Statute 97B.071, anyone hunting or trapping with a firearm or muzzleloader must wear blaze orange or blaze pink on the visible portion of their cap and on the outer clothing above the waist. Sleeves and gloves do not satisfy the requirement.

What Counts as Legal Blaze Orange Clothing?

If you prefer camouflage, the law is clear: at least 50 % of each square foot of the pattern must be blaze orange or blaze pink. This ensures that even patterned garments remain highly visible to other hunters.

Ground Blind Requirements

The same statute applies to hunters using fabric or synthetic ground blinds on public land. The blind must have a blaze orange covering that is visible 360 degrees around it, or each side of the blind must display at least 144 square inches (12 by 12 inches) of blaze orange material. These rules cover firearms, muzzleloader, and archery hunters alike.

When Blaze Orange Is Not Required

  • Hunting migratory waterfowl on water.
  • Hunting in areas that are open only to archery.
  • Trapping on the water.

In these three situations, the blaze orange or pink requirement does not apply.

Does an Orange or Pink Hat Fulfill the Rule?

No. Wearing an orange or pink hat alone does not meet the full requirement. The visible portion of the cap and the upper clothing must both display the required color.

Why This Matters for Families and Communities

Ensuring that hunters are easily seen protects families who enjoy the outdoors together and upholds the tradition of responsible stewardship of Minnesota’s wildlife resources. The DNR’s clear guidelines help prevent accidental shootings, keeping both hunters and non‑hunters safe.

Tips for a Safe Opening Weekend

  • Inspect your cap and jacket for visible blaze orange or pink before heading out.
  • If you wear camouflage, measure the pattern to confirm it meets the 50 % rule.
  • Check any ground blind you plan to use for the required orange covering or the 144 square‑inch panels.
  • Remember the three exceptions—waterfowl, archery‑only zones, and water trapping.

Stay safe, respect the law, and enjoy a successful hunting season. The DNR encourages hunters to share their trophy photos through the official app, fostering community pride and accountability.
