Presidio County deputies seize stolen 2025 Toyota RAV4 cloned for export to Mexico

Presidio County, Texas – In a joint operation with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Presidio, sheriff’s deputies recovered a stolen 2025 Toyota RAV4 that had been cloned and prepared for illegal export to Mexico. The vehicle, originally registered in New York City, was found at a yard used by illegal‑immigrant traffickers near the U.S.–Mexico border.

Investigation and recovery

The investigation began after the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office received intelligence indicating that stolen vehicles were being moved through the Presidio area for cross‑border trafficking. Law‑enforcement partners from multiple states shared information, allowing deputies to pinpoint the location of the cloned RAV4.

Deputies, alongside HSI agents, executed a coordinated raid on the yard, securing the vehicle without incident. The recovered RAV4 had its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) altered to conceal its stolen origin, a common tactic used by criminal networks seeking to profit from the U.S. auto market while evading detection.

Potential charges and ongoing investigation

Authorities have not yet released the names of the individuals involved, but they remain under investigation. Depending on the evidence gathered, prosecutors may pursue charges that could include vehicle theft, VIN tampering, and participation in a criminal enterprise that facilitates illegal export of U.S. goods.

“We will continue to work closely with our federal partners to disrupt these criminal networks,” said Presidio County Sheriff John Miller. “Our community’s safety depends on vigilant law‑enforcement cooperation across jurisdictional lines.”

Impact on the community

The successful recovery sends a clear message to traffickers that the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with federal agencies, is committed to protecting the region from crime that threatens both public safety and the integrity of the local economy. Residents have expressed relief that law‑enforcement remains proactive in addressing cross‑border criminal activity.

County officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that any additional leads will be pursued aggressively. The sheriff’s office encourages anyone with information about vehicle theft or illegal export operations to contact them directly.

Broader context

Vehicle theft and cloning have become a growing concern in border counties, where stolen automobiles are often shipped southward for resale. Collaborative efforts between local sheriffs, state police, and federal agencies like HSI are essential to curbing this trend.

Presidio County’s continued vigilance reflects a broader commitment across West Texas to safeguard communities, uphold the rule of law, and protect American property from criminal exploitation.
