Green Bay Metro Fire Department crews arrived around 7:30 p.m. on November 6 to a reported garage fire in the 800 block of Shawano Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke filling the garage but no visible flames, indicating that the homeowners had already taken steps to suppress the fire.
Quick action limited damage
The residents had evacuated the house and partially extinguished the fire before the department’s arrival. While conducting an overhaul, crews discovered additional smoke emanating from the roofline of an attached breezeway at the rear of the home. Further investigation revealed fire spreading into a wall that had been added to the original structure during past renovations.
Those earlier renovations created several void spaces within the wall, providing hidden pathways for the fire to travel. By identifying and sealing those concealed areas, firefighters were able to fully contain the blaze and prevent it from reaching the main living spaces.
No injuries, no displacement
Fortunately, no firefighters or residents were injured during the incident, and the family was able to remain in their home after the fire was extinguished. The total estimated damage from the garage fire and the affected wall is approximately $20,000.
Investigation continues
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The fire department will continue to work with the homeowners and relevant authorities to determine the origin of the blaze and to provide recommendations for preventing similar incidents in the future.
Green Bay Metro Fire Department reminds residents that regular maintenance of garages, proper storage of flammable materials, and prompt response to any signs of smoke can help protect homes from fire hazards. Homeowners are also encouraged to review any past renovations for potential hidden voids that could allow fire to spread unnoticed.
