Does Toledo Have a Real Dim Sum Spot? Yes, and It’s on Secor

What do you do on a Sunday morning in Toledo when you want something other than eggs and toast? If you haven’t been to Asian Garden on Secor Road, you’ve been missing one of the more reliable weekend rituals this city has to offer.

Asian Garden sits in a strip mall near the intersection of Secor and Central — the kind of location that makes first-timers hesitant, which is probably part of why it still feels local. The sign is modest. The parking lot fills up fast on weekend mornings anyway, which tells you what you need to know about how the regulars feel about it.

Sunday dim sum runs from around 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and that’s when you want to show up. Arrive close to opening if you’re with a group, because the dining room moves at its own pace and tables fill steadily. Carts push out from the kitchen carrying bamboo steamers, small plates, and folded paper menus you mark with a pen. If you’ve done dim sum before, you’ll fall into the rhythm immediately. If you haven’t, just say yes to the first few things that come by — har gow, siu mai, turnip cake — and get oriented before you start being selective.

The har gow here hold together the way they should, the skin thin enough to be translucent without tearing when you pick them up with chopsticks. The siu mai are dense and savory, pork and shrimp, with a dab of orange roe on top. The sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf — lo mai gai — is worth flagging down a cart for specifically; it arrives warm, and the filling inside is rich without being heavy. Egg tarts show up later in the rotation, the pastry shell short and crumbly, the custard just set.

The full bill for two people eating well runs somewhere in the $20–$30 range, sometimes a bit more if you’re enthusiastic about the carts. For a family of four, budget around $50 and you’ll have room to try a lot. Tea is included, and the service staff will refill your pot without being asked if you leave the lid ajar — a small thing that signals the kitchen knows what it’s doing.

Beyond dim sum, the regular menu runs the length of a Cantonese-American lineup: roast duck, seafood dishes, various clay pot preparations. Lunch and dinner on weekdays are quieter, and it’s a good fallback when you want something specific — the braised tofu with mushrooms, or the whole fish if it’s available — without the weekend crowd.

Toledo doesn’t have a Chinatown or a dense cluster of authentic Chinese options the way larger Midwest cities do, which makes a place like this more valuable than its setting suggests. The staff recognize returning customers. The food is consistent. And on a gray Sunday when the rest of the city is still deciding what to do, there’s something genuinely satisfying about pulling into that strip mall parking lot, knowing exactly what you came for.

Go hungry. Bring people. Let the carts come to you.
