Faithful Voters Honor Ancestors’ Sacrifice and Embrace the Sacred Duty of the Ballot

Across the nation, millions have already cast their ballots, and many are reflecting on the weight of this historic moment. For people of faith, voting is far more than a political calculation; it is a profound act of stewardship, a tool for community survival, and an expression of our deepest moral values.

Remembering the Sacrifice of Our Ancestors

The right to vote was not a gift—it was paid for in blood, sacrifice, and the unwavering determination of those who refused second‑class citizenship. For decades, Black Americans, low‑income families, and other marginalized groups faced violent police dogs, high‑pressure fire hoses, mandatory literacy tests designed to fail, and the constant threat of white supremacist violence.

Historians estimate that dozens of documented freedom fighters were murdered during the voting‑rights campaigns of the 1950s and 1960s, with countless other deaths unrecorded or unpunished. Millions more endured brutal beatings and dehumanizing jail cells. The protections we rely on today were forged in the heat of protest, through the 1961 Freedom Rides, the dangerous 1964 Freedom Summer registration drives, and the brutal crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge on “Bloody Sunday” in 1965.

Honoring the Heroes

We remember Fannie Lou Hamer, a sharecropper’s daughter who was brutally beaten in a Mississippi jail for her voting‑rights activism and famously declared she was “sick and tired of being sick and tired.” We honor John Lewis, whose skull was fractured by police batons in Selma, and who spent his life defending what he called “the most powerful non‑violent tool we have.” We also honor Jimmie Lee Jackson, a 26‑year‑old church deacon and veteran shot by an Alabama state trooper while protecting his family during a peaceful march; Medgar Evers, the NAACP field secretary assassinated for his civil‑rights work; and Viola Liuzzo, a mother of five who was killed by Ku Klux Klan members after driving fellow Selma marchers.

Faith, Scripture, and the Ballot

Viewing the ballot box through the lens of history and faith shifts the narrative from partisan warfare to spiritual responsibility. In Micah 6:8 we are asked, “What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” Casting a ballot with the collective community in mind helps fulfill that divine mandate. Proverbs 29:2 teaches, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice,” underscoring that righteous public policy is about fairness, equity, and protecting human dignity.

Our Ongoing Commitment

Regardless of election outcomes, our assignment remains unchanged. If your candidate won, hold them accountable to justice and mercy. If your candidate lost, remain resilient, keep your hands on the plow to protect the vulnerable, and speak truth to power. Our ultimate hope does not rest in any political party or elected official.

For those who have already voted, we commend you for honoring the ancestors. If you have not yet cast your ballot, consider this a reminder of our ongoing sacred responsibility—not a cause for fear or cynicism, but a call to love our neighbors through civic participation.

While progress has been made, systemic violence persists. Civil‑rights groups and the organization JULIAN documented more than 70 cases of suspected modern‑day lynchings across seven Southern states between 2000 and 2025. Independent tracking by groups such as Black Lives Matter of Atlanta reported at least 22 Black individuals dead under suspicious circumstances between March 2025 and August 2026.

Each vote helps bring about the necessary change, and that change begins at the ballot box. Let us honor the legacy of those who gave their lives for our right to vote by casting our ballots with prayerful purpose and steadfast resolve.
