Arizona’s women’s volleyball squad hosted Utah on Friday afternoon and was defeated in straight sets, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18. The Wildcats managed a total of ten blocks, with senior middle blocker Journey Tucker leading the effort with nine, including two solo blocks. Tucker added four kills for 9.5 points and posted a .375 hitting percentage.
Coach Stubbs praises individual effort
Head coach Rita Stubbs praised Tucker’s performance, noting the player finished the day eighth in the Big 12 for blocks per set. “She’s walking in her strength, getting her hands over the net and taking pride without being prideful,” Stubbs said.
Offensive struggles and a need for confidence
Outside hitter Destiny Ndam‑Simpson delivered a double‑double with 12 kills and 12 digs, but her hitting percentage fell to .195. She also contributed an assist and two total blocks, leading the team with 13 points. Fellow outside hitter Carlie Cisneros added 10.5 points on nine kills with a .240 hitting percentage.
Stubbs observed that the team’s attacking rhythm faltered as the match progressed. “We stopped going up trying to score,” she explained. “Our passing slipped a bit, and we became tentative in the attacking area, dropping from 14 kills in the first set to 11 in the second and nine in the third.”
Players work on aggression and confidence
Ndam‑Simpson said the coaching staff, including assistant coach Ryan Ammerman, is focusing on overcoming timidity that can limit scoring opportunities. “I’m learning to trust my swing and be more aggressive, even if it means taking a swing that isn’t perfect,” she said.
Stubbs echoed this sentiment, noting the team has taken “baby steps” toward a more balanced approach. “We’ve been overly aggressive at times, and nothing good has come from it. It’s about getting over the hump and building momentum,” she added.
Depth moves and roster adjustments
Due to an injury to left‑side defensive specialist Brenna Ginder, backup setter Maria Olga Siapani was used as a defensive specialist. Siapani logged one assist, one ace, and six digs across the three sets, demonstrating her ability to hold the right‑back position and step in when starter Harmony Sample needs to take the first ball.
Match flow and upcoming travel
Utah led wire‑to‑wire in the opening set, pulling ahead as much as 14-7 before Arizona narrowed the gap to a single point at 21-20 and 22-21. Utah closed the set with the final three points. The second set saw Arizona take an early three‑point lead, but Utah tied the score at 11 and never fell behind again, finishing 25-22. In the third set, Arizona’s only lead came at 3-2, and Utah secured the win by taking seven of the last eight points.
The early start was necessary because the Wildcats must travel to Lubbock, Texas, for an 11 a.m. match against Texas Tech on Sunday. The team will depart Saturday morning on a commercial flight.
Looking ahead
Despite the loss, the Wildcats remain optimistic. “We’re building momentum and upholding our standards,” Ndam‑Simpson said. “Every set we’ve played has been above 20 points, and we’re focused on closing out sets and strengthening our foundation for the rest of the season.”
Arizona’s recent sweep of Texas Tech gave the program its only conference win so far, but the team continues to work toward turning close sets into victories as the season progresses.
