Buffalo Officer Marc Hurst, shot six times, celebrates upcoming wedding

Buffalo, N.Y. – Five months after being shot six times while responding to a domestic violence emergency, Officer Marc Hurst is preparing to exchange vows with his fiancée, Haley. The 2024 incident, which left Hurst hospitalized for a week, has become a testament to his faith, perseverance, and the support of the Buffalo community.

From the scene of violence to a hopeful future

On May 26, Hurst answered a call near Broadway and Sherman Street. A dispatcher reported, “One officer shot. Every available to Sherman.” Hurst was struck six times and rushed to Erie County Medical Center. After six days in the hospital, he walked out on his own, greeted by fellow officers who gathered to see his recovery.

During his recovery, Hurst reflected on the experience, saying, “I just remember, and I believe it’s just from the Lord, this overwhelming peace.” He added that even while lying on the floor, his thoughts turned to his upcoming wedding: “She’s gonna be really ticked off if I miss this wedding.”

A city honors a hero

Last month, the City of Buffalo presented Hurst with the Medal of Honor, recognizing his bravery and dedication to public safety. The award ceremony highlighted not only his courage on the job but also his gratitude for the love and support that helped him heal.

Haley’s steadfast support

Haley, who learned of the shooting through a colleague, described the weeks that followed as “humbling and emotional.” She shuttled back and forth to the hospital, bringing clothes and encouragement, while both kept their eyes on the wedding date just months away.

“We still get married in a couple of months, and we almost didn’t,” Haley said, emphasizing how the ordeal deepened their commitment.

Faith and family at the center

For Hurst, the upcoming ceremony is more than a celebration; it is a reminder of the gift of life. “Marriage is a gift. Haley’s a gift,” he said. “I feel undeserving in a lot of ways, and I’m just so, so blessed.” He credits his survival to divine grace and hopes his story will encourage others to trust in God’s providence during trials.

The wedding, set for this Friday, will be attended by family, fellow officers, and members of the community who have rallied around the couple. Hurst says he looks forward to watching his nieces walk down the aisle and to the simple joy of seeing Haley enter the church.

Community response

Buffalo residents have expressed admiration for Hurst’s resilience. Social‑media posts and local news outlets have highlighted his recovery as an example of the city’s strong spirit and the importance of supporting first‑responders and their families.

As the couple prepares for their ceremony, Hurst’s story serves as a reminder that even in the face of violence and danger, love, faith, and community can prevail.
