Nashville volunteer gives away 7,000+ bikes to kids in Fall Brook neighborhood

In the heart of Nashville’s Fall Brook Apartments, a simple gift is changing lives. Terry Key, the founder of Music City Riders, has donated more than 7,000 bicycles to children in the community over the past ten years. The program began when Hands on Nashville provided Key with his first 40 bikes, and it has grown into a neighborhood‑wide effort to give kids a positive outlet and a reminder that they matter.

From a single donation to a lasting movement

Key, who grew up in the area now known as Fall Brook, says the early support from local leaders was skeptical. “They said, ‘Dellway? Ain’t no way,’” he recalls. “But I grew up out there and I’m not going to give up on the place I call home.”

Today, the bike club is more than a collection of wheels. It is a community hub where children learn responsibility, build friendships, and gain confidence. “Since we showed kids we cared, they ended up graduating from high school, went to college and now they come back and tell other kids about the bike club,” Key said.

Impact on families and schools

Neighbors see the program as priceless. Long‑time resident Tonia Collier explains, “They’re doing the best they can. When someone like Terry comes out here to feed the kids and show them attention, it’s priceless.” Collier adds that the neighborhood is far from a “Mr. Rogers” setting, but the bike club offers a constructive alternative to the challenges residents face.

Security cameras line the streets, a reminder of the area’s safety concerns. Yet the presence of volunteers on bicycles offers a visible sign of hope. Joshua, a 16‑year‑old who received his first bike through the program, said, “This is my first time having a bike.” He and other teens now ride together, creating a sense of belonging that extends beyond the streets.

Community partners join the ride

Key’s efforts are bolstered by local partners. On a recent Friday, he was joined by childhood friends Chris Williams and Terrance Key, while Robert Moody of Roadside Pantry provided free food. William Anderson of Veloteers Bicycle Club donated additional bicycles, expanding the fleet for future riders.

The program relies on donations and volunteer time. Those who wish to support Music City Riders can contact Terry directly at [email protected]. The goal remains the same: keep giving, keep riding, and keep showing every child that they are valued.

Looking ahead

Key says there are no plans to slow down. He hopes other community members will join the mission, creating a ripple effect of generosity throughout Nashville and beyond. As more bikes roll out onto the streets of Fall Brook, the message is clear: every child deserves a chance to ride, learn, and thrive.
