Monument, Colorado – Army Sergeant Major Daniel Hendrix, a local veteran who served more than two decades in the U.S. Army, has seen his home transformed into a mortgage‑free, fully accessible smart residence thanks to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Smart Home Program.
Smart Home Program lifts financial and mobility burdens
The Tunnel to Towers Foundation announced that it covered the remaining balance on Hendrix’s mortgage and funded a series of accessibility upgrades. The program’s goal is to create mortgage‑free, technology‑enhanced homes for injured veterans and first responders, allowing them to live with dignity and independence.
“It’s like my home has doubled in size, now that I can navigate my entire home,” Hendrix said in a press release. “It feels like life just got easier, even if now I don’t have an excuse not to help with the laundry anymore.”
Renovations tailored to his needs
The renovations include a remodeled downstairs bathroom, an accessible door leading to the deck, a modified laundry room, a stair lift, and a backup generator for emergencies. In addition, smart‑home technology was installed so the family can control lighting, security and other systems through a mobile app.
Hendrix, who enlisted in 1993, served in Bosnia, Cuba, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. A parachute accident in 2012 resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee. He described his military service as “being part of the world’s strongest team and serving something greater than my own self‑interest,” and he emphasized the lifelong bonds formed with his fellow soldiers.
Community support and recognition
The news of the Smart Home Program was shared with Hendrix in 2025 during a pre‑game ceremony at Citi Field, where he expressed shock and gratitude. “The mortgage getting paid alone is a life changer; it means so many fewer restrictions for me and my family,” he said.
Local leaders and veterans’ groups praised the foundation’s effort, noting that such assistance not only eases financial strain but also restores mobility and confidence for those who have sacrificed for the nation.
