Katie Grace Foundation provides new shoes and winter gear to Gardnerville students

Gardnerville families saw a bright‑spot this week as the Katie Grace Foundation set up a pop‑up shoe store at Scarselli Elementary School and Pau‑Wa‑Lu Middle School. The event, part of the foundation’s annual shoe program, delivered about 1,500 pairs of brand‑name shoes to roughly 250 students who needed new footwear.

Local volunteers and sponsors make the day possible

Starbucks volunteers staffed the pop‑up, helping children find the right size, try on shoes, and select styles from brands such as Nike, Converse and Vans. Each student also received three pairs of socks, a tribute to Katie Grace, whose favorite number was three.

Beyond shoes, the foundation offered winter jackets, beanies, gloves and school supplies for those who wanted additional items. Whole Foods contributed fresh food to keep volunteers and students energized throughout the day.

Foundation expands its reach beyond Reno

According to a Douglas County School District Facebook post, the Katie Grace Foundation chose 15 schools for this year’s program, adding Gardnerville to a list that previously focused on the Reno area. “We decided to go to our surrounding areas,” said Kimberly Weingartner, founder of the foundation. “We chose Minden because Starbucks is one of our sponsors, and we know that Starbucks is out in this area.”

Honoring a legacy of generosity

Weingartner started the foundation in memory of her daughter, Katie, who passed away ten years ago. Katie was remembered for her kindness, generosity and love of shoes. “She loved shoes, and I love shoes, so we just decided to make this part of her legacy,” Weingartner explained.

The program began with 40 pairs of shoes purchased with Weingartner’s own money and has grown to distribute more than 7,000 pairs of new shoes to children in need across Northern Nevada.

Community partners support the effort

Hot August Nights provides major financial support, while other local businesses and brands donate shoes and additional supplies. The foundation also collaborates with nonprofit organizations throughout Northern Nevada to distribute donated products and essential items to underserved communities.

“It’s strictly about kids that are in need and could use a new pair of shoes,” Weingartner emphasized.
