St. Louis — The St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday that 34‑year‑old Rob Cerfolio has been promoted to general manager. Cerfolio has served as the club’s assistant GM for player development and performance over the past three seasons, reporting directly to President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom.
Experience and background
Before joining the Cardinals, Cerfolio spent a decade climbing the ranks with the Cleveland Guardians, including his final three years as the team’s director of player development. He arrived in St. Louis two years ago and has been credited with driving the organization’s recent youth movement, highlighted by breakout seasons from outfielder Jordan Walker and second baseman JJ Wetherholt.
Comments from leadership
“Since joining the Cardinals two years ago, Cerfolio has spearheaded tremendous progress in our player development efforts from top to bottom, and in the advancement of our performance group and its integration within our entire organization,” Bloom said. “He is relentless in his desire to move us forward, and is invested in relationships with both new hires and longtime staff alike.”
Organizational changes
The promotion follows the departure of executive Randy Flores, who left the club Monday after 11 years in St. Louis, including eight as assistant GM overseeing amateur and pro acquisitions.
Cerfolio, a Yale graduate originally from Indian Springs, Alabama, will continue to reside in St. Louis, where the Cardinals are looking to rebound after a 77‑85 season that placed them fourth in the NL Central and marked a fourth straight year missing the playoffs.
