Hendersonville Unveils $400K Pump Track at Veterans Park and $1.5M Maintenance HQ

Hendersonville is putting its sales‑tax revenue to work for families and outdoor enthusiasts. The city announced two major parks projects: a $400,000 pump track at Veterans Park and a $1.5 million replacement for the aging Drakes Creek maintenance building.

Community‑inspired pump track

The idea for the pump track came from local bike dealer David Harden, who said he saw a similar facility at the Sea Otter Classic and believed Hendersonville needed one of its own. “I saw a pump track at the big Sea Otter Classic, and I thought, man, that’s what this community needs,” Harden told the city.

Parks Director Andy Gilley confirmed the city acted on that suggestion. Excavators have already moved dirt, and crews are laying an asphalt loop designed for riders of all skill levels. State and federal grants cover 80 percent of the cost, leaving the city to fund the remaining $80,000. The track is slated to be ready around Christmas, giving families a safe, family‑friendly venue for recreation.

New maintenance headquarters

Hendersonville is also addressing a long‑standing problem at its parks maintenance facility. The current Drakes Creek building has flooded at least three times in the past 50 years, and mold issues forced staff to work elsewhere. “You know, not dreading sitting in a building that you see water stains on the walls or we had to get out of it because it had mold two years ago,” one employee said.

The city will replace the old structure with a modern, flood‑resistant complex costing about $1.5 million, fully funded by the municipality. The first phase is expected to be completed by spring, providing a reliable base for the crews who keep Hendersonville’s parks clean and safe.

Taxpayer dollars put to visible use

Both projects are being financed largely by local sales‑tax revenue, a clear example of the city’s commitment to transparency and responsible stewardship. “I think that gives the public something tangible to see where their money’s being spent,” Gilley said.

These investments reflect Hendersonville’s focus on family‑centered recreation and sound municipal management, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a place where community input shapes public amenities.
