Mike’s Grill Celebrates 17 Years of Family‑Run Tri‑Tip Sandwiches in Fresno

Fresno’s food scene is built on family‑run institutions, and Mike’s Grill on Cedar Avenue is a prime example. For 17 years, owner Michael Sanders and his two sons, Logan (23) and Brody (19), have served a smoked tri‑tip sandwich that many locals consider the city’s best.

From a Tiny Kiosk to a Local Institution

The 150‑square‑foot kiosk, which once housed a Fotomat and a Lehman’s Lock and Safe, opened its doors in 2009 on a Saturday the county fair was still in town. Sanders says the location was chosen for its low rent and the chance to learn the restaurant business on the side. He signed a three‑year lease and began serving tri‑tip sandwiches, a cut of beef that the nearby Meat Market had recently popularized.

“I wanted to make a sandwich that stayed together,” Sanders explains. He intentionally made the bread larger so he could slice the meat thinly and add herb butter, avoiding the fat and gristle that can ruin a bite. The result is a wider, sesame‑seeded baguette that holds the meat, beans, and toppings without falling apart.

Behind the Scenes: A Hidden Commissary Kitchen

While the kiosk is the public face of Mike’s Grill, the real kitchen is an 1,800‑square‑foot commissary space in the same shopping center. Sanders rented the space shortly after opening, after a local meat‑market owner warned that the tiny kiosk would soon be outgrown. The commissary handles the heavy lifting—trimming, smoking, and preparing the tri‑tip, pulled pork, chili beans, and other menu items—allowing the front of house to stay focused on quick service.

“People tried to steal the big yellow smoker about six or seven times,” Sanders recalls. “Eventually the landlord asked us to remove it because it had become an eyesore.” The smoker was replaced with a more discreet setup, but the tri‑tip continues to be smoked daily in the commissary kitchen.

Family Values at the Core

Mike’s Grill exemplifies the traditional family values that underpin Fresno’s neighborhoods. Sanders runs the business alongside his sons, who help prep food and serve customers. Their involvement reflects a commitment to passing a work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit to the next generation.

“We’re not a chain; we’re a family,” Logan says. “People come here because they know the sandwich is made with care, and they know the owners are part of the community.”

Staying True to the Original Recipe

Aside from the removal of the yellow smoker, the menu has seen only minor tweaks. The core of the sandwich—smoked tri‑tip, fresh bread, herb butter, and optional toppings—remains unchanged. Customers who noticed the missing smoker initially feared a shift in ownership or quality, but Sanders assures them that the same smoked meat is still prepared in the same commissary kitchen that has been in use for more than 15 years.

“The sandwich is the same,” Sanders affirms. “We’ve just made the operation more efficient while keeping the flavor that people love.”

Looking Ahead

Sanders hints that the iconic yellow smoker might someday return as a nostalgic display, pending lease terms with the shopping‑center owner. For now, Mike’s Grill continues to serve its signature sandwich to a loyal customer base, proving that a small, family‑run kiosk can thrive in a competitive market when it stays true to its roots.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first‑time visitor, Mike’s Grill offers a taste of Fresno’s culinary heritage—simple, honest food made by a family that cares about its community.
