Antique shop owners Mike and Trudy Naylor close Springfield store to resume traveling sales

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – After a decade‑and‑a‑half of serving downtown shoppers, the antique shop Abe’s Old Hat on Sixth Street closed its doors on Nov. 1. The owners, Mike and Trudy Naylor, said the decision is not a retirement but a return to the traveling antiques circuit that originally sparked their business.

Health and a full‑circle transition

According to Springfield Business Journal executive editor Michelle Ownbey, the Naylor’s began the Sixth Street location when Mike’s health limited his ability to travel. “Now his health is doing better, which is great,” Ownbey reported. “Antiques are not the kind of thing that you buy on impulse, not necessarily being the sort of foot traffic they would like, even being close to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. They’ve decided to go back to the traveling circuit.”

Sixteen years in the heart of downtown

For sixteen years, Abe’s Old Hat sat next to the popular Wild Rose restaurant, offering collectors and casual shoppers a curated selection of vintage furniture, decorative arts, and memorabilia. The shop became a familiar stop for locals and tourists alike, especially those visiting the nearby Lincoln Library and Museum.

Returning to the road

Mike and Trudy plan to resume the itinerant model that allowed them to bring antiques to fairs, estate sales, and private collectors across the region. “We’re not stepping away from antiques; we’re simply shifting how we bring them to people,” the Naylors said in a brief statement. The couple hopes the mobile approach will let them reach a broader audience while accommodating Mike’s improved health.

Impact on the downtown scene

The closure leaves a small vacancy on Sixth Street, a corridor that has seen a mix of new restaurants, boutique retailers, and cultural venues in recent years. Local business owners expressed appreciation for the Naylor’s contribution to the area’s historic‑preservation vibe.

Looking ahead

Ownbey noted that the Naylor’s transition reflects a broader trend among small‑business owners who adapt operations to personal circumstances and market realities. “Their decision underscores the resilience of entrepreneurs who can pivot when life changes,” she said.

Mike and Trudy Naylor will continue to be active members of Springfield’s antique community, now on the road rather than a fixed storefront. Residents can follow their upcoming travel schedule on the shop’s social‑media pages.

Ownbey talks business Thursdays at 8:40 a.m. on the WTAX Morning Newswatch.
