On Saturday, November 7, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., the Sheridan Public Arts Committee (SPAC) will hold a public reception at the Museum of the Bighorns. The event gives Sheridan residents a chance to meet Professor Littleto Alston, the artist selected to create the Iron Riders Memorial.
Honoring a Pioneering African American Unit
The Iron Riders Memorial will commemorate the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, an African American unit that, in 1897, completed a 1,900‑mile bicycle trek from Fort Missoula, Montana, to St. Louis, Missouri. Their route passed through the Sheridan area, showcasing remarkable endurance, innovation, and determination.
Artist Selection Process
SPAC received 36 applications for the project. After a competitive review, the committee chose Professor Alston to translate this important story into a permanent public artwork that will enrich Sheridan’s growing collection of public art.
What to Expect at the Reception
During the reception, Professor Alston will share his vision for the memorial, explain the inspiration behind his design, and answer questions from community members and SPAC board members. The gathering is free and open to anyone interested in learning more about the project and its next steps.
SPAC’s Role in Sheridan’s Cultural Landscape
The Sheridan Public Arts Committee works to enhance the city’s cultural environment through acquisition, exhibition, and stewardship of public art. With more than 100 works already displayed throughout Sheridan, the Iron Riders Memorial will add another meaningful piece that celebrates creativity, history, and the unique character of the region.
Residents are encouraged to attend, meet the artist, and become part of the conversation shaping this historic tribute.
