Kayak Fishing on Lewisville Lake Starts at Copperas Creek

Nobody tells you about the first hour on the water. You pull into Copperas Creek Park off FM 2181 sometime before eight, and the lake is still glassy. A great blue heron is standing in the shallows near the boat ramp like it owns the place. By noon that bird will be long gone, the ski boats will be running, and the wind will have picked up. But right now it’s quiet, and that’s the whole point.

Copperas Creek is one of several Corps of Engineers day-use areas around Lewisville Lake, but it’s become the go-to spot for kayak anglers and paddlers who want to actually get somewhere without fighting wave chop all morning. The launch is paved, which matters when you’re carrying a loaded fishing kayak. Parking is decent sized, there are pit toilets on site, and the entry fee runs around five dollars per vehicle — cheap enough that you stop noticing it after the second or third visit.

Once you’re on the water, you have two good directions. Paddle north and you’ll work into the creek arm itself, where the water narrows and bass tend to hold along submerged timber and grassy edges in spring and early fall. Go south toward the main lake and you’re covering open flats with scattered structure — good for white bass runs in late winter when the fish are chasing shad near the surface. Either way, you’re looking at calm, manageable water most weekday mornings, which is exactly when you want to be here.

If fishing isn’t your thing, the paddling is still worth the trip. The creek arm has enough turns and tree cover to feel genuinely removed from the suburban sprawl about ten minutes away on I-35. You can be watching an osprey dive for a fish one moment and then, ten minutes later, spot the rooflines of a housing development through the treeline. That’s Lewisville Lake in a nutshell — it’s never pretending to be wilderness, but it delivers on the nature part more than you’d expect from a DFW reservoir.

Bring sunscreen and more water than you think you need. The North Texas sun on open water is brutal by late morning from April through October, and there’s no shade once you leave the creek arm. A small cooler and a dry bag for your phone are non-negotiable. If you’re renting rather than bringing your own gear, the outfitters that work this lake mostly operate seasonally and are worth calling ahead rather than assuming they’ll be set up at the ramp.

The park is day-use only — gates close at sunset — so there’s no overnight camping here. That keeps the crowd manageable. On a Tuesday morning in September, you might share the launch with one other truck-and-trailer combo. On a Saturday in June, expect to wait your turn. Plan accordingly, and get there early either way.

What keeps people coming back isn’t any single dramatic feature. It’s the combination: an easy launch, fishable water, enough natural character to make you glad you came, and a price that doesn’t require any convincing. Lewisville Lake gets overlooked in favor of flashier destinations, but Copperas Creek is a legitimate reason to load the kayak the night before and set an alarm.
