Seven Candidates File for 25th Ward Aldermanic Race as Petition Challenges Loom

Chicago’s 25th Ward, covering Pilsen, University Village and part of Little Village, now has a full slate of seven candidates seeking the aldermanic seat. The filing window closed with incumbent Alderman Byron Sigcho‑Lopez and six challengers submitting the required petition signatures to the Chicago Board of Elections.

Who is running?

The candidates are:

  • Aida Flores – a Pilsen educator and mother, running for a third time after earning 47% of the vote in the 2023 race.
  • Nubia Batista Willman – an immigration attorney who previously directed the city’s Office of New Americans and served as chief engagement officer under former Mayor Lori Lightfoot.
  • Ian Watkins – a classically trained pianist, retired ballet dancer and communications strategist.
  • Miguel Chacon – a real‑estate agent, housing advocate and longtime Pilsen neighbor.
  • Leonardo Quintero – a Pilsen resident, community organizer and member of the local police district council.
  • Chula C. Ortiz – a mother and former Chicago Park District employee who previously ran for the 12th Ward in 2011, receiving about 3% of the vote.
  • Byron Sigcho‑Lopez – the incumbent, a self‑described Democratic Socialist, seeking a third term after winning in 2019 and 2023.

Petition challenges

Two of the challengers may not appear on the February 23 ballot. Former 25th Ward candidate Daniel Montes‑Talledos has filed challenges to the petition signatures of Ian Watkins and Chula C. Ortiz, alleging insufficient valid signatures. The Board of Elections will review the challenges before certifying the ballot on December 17.

Background on the incumbent

Sigcho‑Lopez entered the race after an unsuccessful attempt to collect enough signatures to run as an independent for Illinois’ 4th Congressional District. Known for his outspoken positions on foreign policy, the billionaire class, Governor JB Pritzker and federal immigration enforcement actions in Chicago, he has become a somewhat controversial figure on the City Council.

Election timeline

The aldermanic election is scheduled for February 23, 2027. Voters in the 25th Ward will choose among the remaining candidates after the Board of Elections finalizes the ballot in mid‑December.

Local impact

The 25th Ward’s diverse neighborhoods rely heavily on responsive local representation for issues ranging from affordable housing to public safety and community development. Residents are encouraged to review each candidate’s platform and attend any upcoming forums or meet‑and‑greets before casting their ballots.

What’s next?

Following the ballot certification, the campaign season will intensify with candidate outreach, debates and voter‑education efforts. Community organizations and local churches are expected to play a key role in informing families about the choices ahead, reinforcing the importance of civic participation in shaping the ward’s future.
