J.M. Hanks High School Marching Band Returns to State Competition for Seventh Year

San Antonio, Texas – The J.M. Hanks High School marching band once again represented the community on the state stage, performing its award‑winning show “Coming Undone” at the UIL 5A state marching contest inside the Alamodome. The band placed 21st overall, a solid showing among the nation’s top high‑school ensembles.

Consistent Excellence Over Seven Years

For seven straight years, Hanks High has advanced to the state competition after securing the area championship. This streak reflects the dedication of the students, the direction of the band staff, and the support of local families who value music education as a cornerstone of a well‑rounded upbringing.

Performance Highlights

The show, titled “Coming Undone,” combined intricate drill work with a dynamic musical arrangement that highlighted the band’s technical skill and artistic expression. Judges praised the ensemble’s precise marching patterns, strong tonal quality, and the emotional impact of the performance.

Community Support and Faith‑Based Values

Parents and community members gathered in the Alamodome to cheer the young musicians, underscoring the role of traditional families in fostering youth development. Many attendees noted how the band’s commitment to discipline, teamwork, and excellence aligns with the values taught at home and in church.

Looking Ahead

Band director John Martinez expressed optimism about the program’s future, noting that the experience gained at state will help the students grow both musically and personally. “Our students learn perseverance, leadership, and the importance of serving a greater purpose—principles that echo our Christian faith and family values,” Martinez said.

The band will return to its home campus in San Antonio to begin preparations for next season’s competition, with plans to introduce new musical selections and further refine their marching technique. The continued success of the Hanks High marching band serves as a testament to the power of community involvement, parental support, and a commitment to nurturing talent in the next generation.
