Midland County officials broke ground on a nearly $2.9 million project to widen South County Road 1232, commonly known as Antelope Trail, from two lanes to three. The expansion includes a new center turn lane intended to ease congestion and enhance safety for the growing number of commuters who rely on the corridor.
According to KOSA, the first phase keeps South County Road 1232 open to two‑way traffic while work proceeds. West County Road 120 is temporarily closed at the intersection with South County Road 1232, and drivers are being detoured onto West County Road 130. The county has posted detour signs and is urging motorists to exercise caution in the work zone.
The project will be completed in three distinct phases. The initial phase focuses on adding the center turn lane and the third travel lane while maintaining traffic flow. Subsequent phases will address additional roadway improvements and final paving work. County engineers project that the entire construction effort will conclude in March 2027.
Local residents are encouraged to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time while the improvements are underway. The county’s public information office has emphasized that the detour routes are designed to minimize disruption to daily commutes, school buses, and emergency services.
What’s next: Construction crews will continue work through the winter months, with the next phase slated to begin after the initial lane additions are completed. Officials will provide updates on progress and any further traffic adjustments as the project moves toward its March 2027 completion target.
