Pioneer Park renovation set for November reopening; year‑round market building shelved

The Downtown Farmers Market will return to a freshly renovated Pioneer Park next summer, but the long‑awaited permanent market building will not be built. After a year‑and‑a‑half of talks, the Downtown Alliance and Salt Lake City concluded that the proposed structure’s cost outweighed its benefits and that the ownership model and use of public green space could not be reconciled.

Renovation details and timeline

The city’s $18.4 million park renovation is slated to reopen on Nov. 13. Improvements include an all‑abilities playground, six lighted pickleball courts, a basketball court, a dog park, a pavilion and a promenade that can accommodate up to eight food trucks with power hookups. City officials say the redesign is intended for year‑round enjoyment, even during colder months, and will support community gatherings and events throughout the seasons.

Why the permanent market building was dropped

Dee Brewer, executive director of the Downtown Alliance, explained that the working group – convened by the mayor – determined the $20 million‑to‑$25 million building was not justified. “It isn’t the place or the time to do that,” Brewer said, adding that the cost, ownership issues, and the impact on public green space were decisive factors.

Future of the farmers market

The summer market will resume at Pioneer Park from June through October next year, according to Carly Gillespie, director of Urban Food Connections of Utah and the Downtown Farmers Market. The winter market will open Nov. 14 at the former Leonardo Museum (209 E. 500 South), marking its second year at that location after moving from The Gateway when that venue became unavailable.

Gillespie expressed optimism about a permanent home, saying, “We would love to operate 52 weeks out of the year,” but acknowledged that the museum venue provides an affordable solution for winter shoppers, even though it means they will not converge on Pioneer Park during the colder months.

Local business response

Across the street from the park, Wichai Charoen, co‑owner of Laan Na Thai, praised the summer market’s foot traffic, noting that the crowds bring customers to his restaurant. He expressed disappointment that the winter market will be elsewhere but remained hopeful for the summer’s return.

Looking ahead

Gillespie and park officials are eager to see how residents use the renovated space beyond market days. “We’ve done an excellent job activating the park on Saturdays, but it’s time for people to start using this park on other days of the week,” she said.

The decision to forego a permanent market building reflects a prudent fiscal approach by city leaders, ensuring that taxpayer dollars are directed toward tangible park amenities that benefit all residents while still supporting the beloved farmers market through seasonal locations.
