Sixth Avenue’s Freehouse Is Worth Every Barstool

What do you actually eat on Sixth Avenue when you’re not in the mood for tacos or bar food that feels like an afterthought? That’s the question I kept asking myself before a friend dragged me into The Freehouse one rainy Tuesday, and I stopped asking it pretty quickly after that.

The Freehouse sits on Sixth Avenue in the stretch between the denser commercial blocks and the quieter residential side — right where the street starts to feel a little more lived-in. It’s a gastropub in the truest sense of that word, meaning the kitchen is actually serious, not just the beer list. The space is comfortable without being fussy: exposed wood, a long bar, enough natural light during the day that it doesn’t feel like a cave. It fills up on weekend evenings but rarely hits the point of being loud in a way that makes conversation impossible.

The menu changes with the seasons, which sounds like marketing speak until you realize that the fall mushroom toast they had last October was genuinely one of the better bites I’ve had in this city — thick sourdough, earthy chanterelles, something acidic cutting through the richness. They rotate proteins on the larger plates too, so there’s a reason to come back more than once a year. That said, the burger has stayed consistent, and it’s the kind of burger that reminds you why a simple thing done right beats a complicated thing done poorly. Single patty, good cheese, nothing extraneous. Around $16-18 depending on when you go.

The beer program leans local, which in Tacoma means you’re going to see names from places like 7 Seas and Division alongside a few rotating handles from outside the region. They have a solid wine list too, which matters if you’re coming with someone who doesn’t drink beer — it’s not just an obligatory page in the back of the menu. Cocktails are competent, though I’d point you toward the beer or wine first.

Brunch on weekends is worth flagging. The hash is properly crisped and sized for people who plan to do something afterward, not just recover. Expect to wait a bit if you show up after 10 on a Sunday without a reservation — they do take them, and I’d recommend it. Dinner is a little more forgiving for walk-ins midweek.

Pricing is honest for what you get. Appetizers run $10-14, mains in the $18-24 range. It’s not a cheap night, but it’s not a special-occasion-only place either. I’ve gone for a beer and a small plate on a weekday when I didn’t want to cook and left happy and not broke.

The staff tends to actually know the menu, which sounds like a low bar but isn’t always met. If you ask what’s good, you’ll get a real answer instead of a shrug. That alone puts it ahead of a lot of places on this corridor.

If you’re plotting a Sixth Avenue evening and want somewhere that takes the food seriously without asking you to dress up or sit through a tasting menu, The Freehouse is the right call. Go hungry, ask what’s rotating, and get the burger if you’re at all uncertain.
