HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – As the holiday season approaches, the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama is sounding the alarm on a surge of online shopping scams targeting local consumers. In October, 18 residents reported falling victim to fraudulent offers, and the total loss for the year so far tops $86,617 across 313 reported incidents.
Scam tactics and common platforms
BBB President and CEO Karen Reeves explained that most of these schemes originate on popular social‑media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Scammers create near‑identical copies of legitimate brand websites, lure shoppers with deep discounts, and then either ship nothing or deliver inferior knock‑off products that are difficult to return or dispute.
Local example highlights the risk
One recent case involved a Huntsville consumer who spent about $60 after clicking a TikTok advertisement for a discounted soccer jersey that never arrived. The victim’s experience mirrors countless others who have been duped by seemingly authentic ads.
BBB’s practical advice for safe shopping
Reeves urged shoppers to avoid purchasing items directly through social‑media ads. “If you see a great deal on a Chico’s ad inside a social‑media app, do not click on that,” she said. “Instead, open a web browser, search for the company’s official website, and verify the deal there.”
Additional safeguards include:
- Confirm the website displays contact information, a clear return policy, and a secure lock icon next to the URL.
- Use a credit card rather than a debit card, as credit cards provide stronger consumer‑protection tools for disputing fraudulent charges.
- Treat offers that seem too good to be true with skepticism; they often are.
Why the holiday season fuels the problem
Reeves noted that shoppers are beginning their holiday buying earlier each year, giving scammers a longer window to exploit eager consumers. “We always see an uptick as we’re going to enter the holiday season, and folks are shopping earlier and earlier now,” she said. “So I think we will begin to see that.”
The BBB continues to monitor the situation and encourages anyone who suspects fraud to report it promptly. By staying vigilant and following the recommended steps, Huntsville residents can protect themselves and their families from costly online scams.
