Madison, Wis. – Volunteers with Pantry Partners of Dane County are rolling out fresh mitten displays at local retailers to keep their fundraising mission alive. The nonprofit, formerly known as ReMitts, transforms donated wool sweaters into hand‑crafted mittens and dryer balls, then sells the items to generate cash for three area food pantries: St. Vincent de Paul, WayForward Resources and The River Food Pantry.
Rising need for food assistance
Leslie Albrecht Huber, vice president of strategic engagement for WayForward Resources, noted a noticeable uptick in food insecurity over the past six months. “We are giving out 19 % more food than we were the same six months last year,” Huber said. “Having that extra resource in helps us to have extra resources out.” The increase underscores the importance of community‑driven fundraising efforts like those of Pantry Partners.
Challenges and new approaches
Since its founding in 2009, Pantry Partners has relied on a steady stream of donated wool sweaters to craft its signature mittens. Volunteers now report that finding suitable sweaters has become more difficult, prompting the organization to diversify its product line. Ann Nelson, lead volunteer at Pantry Partners, explained that volunteers are now selling fleece mittens at events alongside the traditional wool mittens. “We’re looking for new ways to sustain our mission while we continue to upcycle what we can find,” Nelson said.
Where to buy the mittens
Supporters can purchase the upcycled mittens at special events or at display tables set up in participating businesses throughout Dane County. Current locations include Barriques coffee shop locations and numerous Ace Hardware stores. Each purchase directly supports the three partner food pantries, helping them stock shelves and provide meals to families in need.
How to get involved
Community members who wish to contribute can volunteer their time, donate unwanted wool sweaters, or simply buy a pair of mittens. More information about upcoming sales, volunteer opportunities, and donation drop‑off points is available on the organization’s website, pantrypartnersdane.com. The nonprofit encourages residents to spread the word and help keep the mission thriving.
Looking ahead
With food insecurity on the rise, Pantry Partners hopes that its expanded product offerings and broader retail presence will generate the funds needed to meet growing demand. By turning discarded sweaters into useful winter gear, the group not only supports local families but also promotes sustainable reuse of materials.
