New Haven’s 1938 Tercentenary: Celebration, Storm and Lasting Legacy

In the spring of 1938 New Haven residents donned colonial‑style wool coats and white stockings to kick off a year‑long Tercentenary celebration honoring the city’s 300th birthday. From April onward the streets filled with prayers, speeches, pageants and parades, and schoolchildren even baked a birthday cake for Mayor John Murphy.

The festivities showcased local commerce, invention and a spirit of unity that reflected the city’s growing population—now over 160,000, bolstered by waves of Italian immigration. Business pop‑up events, a grand parade and a religious service in the Yale Bowl highlighted the community’s pride in its Puritan roots, educational zeal and economic ambition.

The Hurricane Strikes

Just weeks after a sweltering August, the Long Island Express hurricane barreled east of New Haven on September 21, 1938. While the city escaped catastrophic loss of life, saturated soils and fierce winds toppled nearly 5,000 mature elm trees that had defined the city’s canopy for generations.

The storm claimed 600 lives across New England, twisted railroad tracks along the New Haven shoreline and flooded towns as far east as Old Saybrook. A striking photograph captured actress Katharine Hepburn perched on a toilet amid the wreckage of her family home in Old Saybrook.

Aftermath and Community Resilience

Despite the disaster, the Tercentenary’s core themes endured. Historian Rollin Osterweis noted that the city’s central Green remained a vibrant link to its past, and that the era’s major drivers—faith, education and a drive for economic advancement—persisted.

1938 also saw the birth of New Haven’s public housing effort when the Board of Aldermen created the Housing Authority of New Haven, one of the nation’s earliest public housing agencies, funded by the federal Housing Act of 1937.

While the Depression still left many storefronts shuttered and breadlines common, the Tercentenary highlighted both the city’s challenges and its capacity for renewal. The celebrations, though lavish, were deliberately inclusive, featuring Italian immigrants marching alongside descendants of the city’s Puritan founders.

Legacy

Today, New Haven’s 1938 story serves as a reminder of how faith, family and civic pride can weather both triumph and tragedy. The city’s historic commitment to education, religious freedom and economic progress continues to shape its identity, even as modern challenges arise.
