DOYLESTOWN, Pa. — A tragic accident on Monday afternoon claimed the life of Katherine “Kitty” Semisch, a beloved former English teacher from Bucks County. Semisch, 67, was struck by a DART bus while walking in the parking lot of the Bucks County Free Library in Doylestown at about 3 p.m.
Family remembers a life of service and optimism
Semisch was rushed to Doylestown Hospital, where she later died from blunt impact injuries to her torso, the Bucks County Coroner’s Office confirmed. Her death has been ruled an accident.
In an interview with Action News, her daughters, Lucy and Maggie Semisch, shared memories of their mother’s devotion to teaching and her community involvement. “We got a chance to see her, and it was really special to be able to say goodbye,” Lucy said. “She looked beautiful.”
Lucy recalled her mother’s 26‑year tenure at Central Bucks West High School, noting that Semisch taught more than grammar and composition. “It wasn’t just about writing a good sentence or using the right words,” she said. “She coached students on how to view life, embrace life, and live life to its fullest.”
Maggie reflected on the personal loss, saying, “I have moments of just thinking about the things that she’s not going to be there for, and it’s so sad. But then I think about all the things she was there for.”
Active in faith and community causes
Beyond the classroom, Semisch was known for her active participation in local charities and advocacy groups. She volunteered with several organizations, including Planned Parenthood, and was recently featured in the PBS docuseries “Bucks County USA.” Her willingness to engage with anyone, regardless of background, was a hallmark of her character, according to her daughters.
“She was willing to speak with anyone about anything and meet them where they were,” Lucy said. “She was involved in so much, and just hearing a little bit of the stories gives us so much comfort to feel like we’re close to her.”
Family left behind
Semisch is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, her son, and three grandchildren. The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from the Doylestown community and the library staff, who helped coordinate emergency response and offered condolences.
Local officials have not yet released a detailed investigation into the bus driver’s actions or the library’s parking safety protocols. The DART transit authority typically reviews such incidents to determine whether additional safety measures are needed.
Community response
Friends, former students, and neighbors have begun sharing memories of Semisch on social media, highlighting her faith, kindness, and dedication to helping others. Many have called for a moment of prayer at the library’s next community gathering, reflecting the strong Christian values that guided her life.
The Bucks County Free Library will hold a private memorial service for Semisch’s family later this week. Details will be posted on the library’s website.
