At approximately 12:11 p.m. on Wednesday, a driver in a small four‑door sedan plowed through the security fence of the Citibank Center campus in Brandon, Florida, and entered an outdoor employee dining area, according to Chief Deputy Frank Losat of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect exited the vehicle carrying a rifle and immediately opened fire on a woman sitting outside, fatally wounding her.
Four minutes after the first 911 calls, an armed Citibank security guard confronted the gunman inside the cafeteria. The two exchanged gunfire, and the guard’s shots mortally wounded the attacker, who later died at Tampa General Hospital, as reported by Fox 13. The guard’s swift action was credited by Losat for preventing further casualties.
In addition to the woman who was killed, four other employees were treated at a local hospital for injuries that were not life‑threatening. The identities of the victims have not been released. Law‑enforcement officials described the incident as a targeted attack, though they have not confirmed any prior relationship between the shooter and the victim.
The response involved more than 360 deputies, SWOT teams, fire‑rescue crews, and state and federal partners, according to both Fox 13 and TampaFP. Officers spent roughly two and a half hours clearing and searching six to seven three‑story buildings on the corporate campus, which housed about 3,200 Citibank employees at the time of the shooting. Staging areas were set up at the nearby Sheraton Tampa Brandon Hotel and Staybridge Suites Tampa East to assist families and coordinate triage.
Investigators will continue questioning witnesses through the night to determine the shooter’s motive. The Citibank Center remains secured, and the company has announced additional security measures for its other sites. Residents are advised to stay alert for any updates from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office as the investigation proceeds.
