Helicopter crash in Biscayne Bay kills one, injures two; investigation underway

Miami‑Dade officials said a Robinson R44 II helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, killing one adult male and critically injuring two others. The incident is significant for Miami residents because the flight was conducting a photography mission over busy waterways, highlighting safety concerns for low‑altitude aerial operations near popular recreation areas.

According to NBC Miami, the three occupants were adult males who had departed North Perry Airport at 10:48 a.m. and were flying for about five minutes over the bay before a sudden drop in altitude was recorded at approximately 11:17 a.m. on the FlightAware tracker. Sheriff Rosie Cordero‑Stutz told a news conference that the helicopter was chartered to film boats on the water when it went down.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported hearing a mayday call from a Good Samaritan and dispatching Marine Interdiction Agents at around 11:20 a.m. The agents, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue, reached the scene within minutes. CBP’s Air and Marine Operations crews recovered two victims from the water—one was taken ashore by ground transport and the other was airlifted to a higher level of care. The pilot was transferred separately by a Miami‑Dade Sheriff’s Office vessel while lifesaving measures continued.

The Miami‑Dade Sheriff’s Office said the surviving occupants were taken to a nearby trauma center in critical but stable condition. A Good Samaritan had initially tried to assist one victim on shore, but despite efforts by Miami firefighters, that individual did not survive, NBC Miami reported.

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed it is investigating the crash, and the agency noted that preliminary information indicates the flight was a photography mission, as reported by the Free Press Journal. The OC Register added that heavy showers had fallen in South Florida over the past few days, though officials have not determined whether weather played a role.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the occupants and are working to notify families. The helicopter remains underwater, and investigators are examining the flight data and wreckage. A follow‑up briefing from the sheriff’s office is expected later this week to update the public on the investigation’s progress.
