Democrats Near Victory in Montana’s U.S. House District 1 Race

Billings, Montana – The race for Montana’s U.S. House District 1 is tightening as late‑Wednesday returns show Democrat Sam Forstag ahead with 50% of the vote. Republican challenger Aaron Flint follows closely with 47%, and Libertarian candidate Nick Sheedy accounts for the remaining 3%.

Forstag, a longtime labor union leader and former smokejumper, would become the first Democrat to represent Montana in the House of Representatives in three decades if the current tally holds. He would join the state’s Republican delegation, which includes Rep. Troy Downing, Sen.-elect Kurt Alme, and Sen. Tim Sheehy.

The seat is open after Rep. Ryan Zinke announced he would not seek re‑election. The open‑seat dynamic has drawn heightened attention from both parties, with national observers watching to see whether the district, traditionally a Republican stronghold, might shift.

While the Associated Press has not yet issued an official call, Forstag has publicly claimed victory based on the numbers available. Flint, however, has not conceded and continues to campaign for any remaining uncounted ballots.

Montana’s 1st District covers a vast, largely rural area that includes Billings, the state’s largest city, as well as smaller communities spread across the eastern portion of the state. Voter turnout in the district has been robust, reflecting strong local engagement in the 2026 midterm elections.

Candidate Backgrounds

Sam Forstag brings decades of experience advocating for workers’ rights. Before entering politics, he served as a union president, negotiating contracts and championing workplace safety. His background as a former smokejumper also gives him a unique perspective on public‑service and emergency response.

Aaron Flint, a Republican businessman, has emphasized fiscal responsibility and limited government in his campaign messaging. He argues that his private‑sector experience equips him to bring efficiency to Washington.

Nick Sheedy, the Libertarian candidate, ran on a platform of personal liberty and reduced federal oversight, though his share of the vote remains modest.

Implications for Montana and Beyond

If Forstag secures the seat, Montana’s congressional delegation would feature a mixed partisan composition, potentially influencing the balance of power on key legislative votes. The outcome also serves as an early indicator of voter sentiment in a state that has leaned Republican at the federal level for many election cycles.

Local leaders have urged voters to complete the ballot‑counting process and respect the final results, emphasizing the importance of a peaceful transition regardless of the winner.

Election officials continue to verify and certify the results in the coming days. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official county clerk updates and reputable news sources.
