The Melting Pot set to reopen downtown Nashville at Third and Union

After a six‑year hiatus caused by the tragic Christmas Day bombing that destroyed the original Second Avenue location, The Melting Pot is preparing to reopen in downtown Nashville. Demetrius Kelley, who managed the restaurant for decades and now holds majority ownership, announced the new site at 315 Deaderick Street, with its entrance at Third and Union, inside the former UBS building.

New location, same family‑focused experience

Kelley said the move reflects a desire to stay in Nashville for another thirty years, just as the original spot served generations of families. “We were in that location for almost 30 years. So, you know, now you know, let’s find another location that we can be in for another 30 years,” he explained.

The new space offers towering windows that will look out over the Metro Courthouse and Public Square Park, providing a bright, communal setting for the restaurant’s signature fondue dining. “Fondue is a communal dinner. It’s about sharing. It’s about interacting,” Kelley emphasized, noting that the interactive cheese and chocolate fondue experience will remain unchanged.

From engineering degree to restaurant stewardship

Kelley’s connection to The Melting Pot began when he was 21, working part‑time while studying engineering. After graduating in 2004, he chose to stay in the restaurant rather than pursue a desk job, saying, “I loved the restaurant. Fell in love with it so much that when I graduated college I got my degree in engineering… I’m gonna wait a little bit before I use this degree.” Twenty‑five years later, he has become the majority owner and is leading the comeback.

Remembering the 2020 bombing

The Christmas morning explosion in 2020 ripped through the Second Avenue building, destroying the restaurant and leaving 150 employees uncertain about their futures. Kelley recalled the chaos: “I look at the cameras, and I see just destruction. I see stuff flying through the air, stuff smoldering, and the sprinkler system going off. I’m like, what is going on?” Despite the devastation, he says walking away was never an option. “We love our home on Second Avenue, but sometimes you have to do what’s best for everybody, and sometimes that’s deciding what the next best thing is.”

Opening plans and community impact

The Melting Pot aims to open in early spring 2027, bringing back jobs and a family‑friendly dining option to downtown Nashville. Kelley stressed that the restaurant’s return is more than a business move; it’s about restoring a place where Nashville families have celebrated milestones for decades. “Downtown has always been our home. We didn’t want our home taken away from us. If we ever were gonna move, we wanted to be on our terms and not somebody else’s,” he said.

Local residents can look forward to a venue that encourages shared meals and community interaction, aligning with Nashville’s tradition of hospitality and family‑centered gathering spaces. The reopening also signals confidence in the city’s recovery and continued growth after the 2020 tragedy.

What to expect

Patrons can anticipate the classic fondue menu—cheese, chocolate, and a selection of dippables—served in a setting that blends modern downtown architecture with the warm, communal atmosphere that made The Melting Pot a Nashville staple. The restaurant’s leadership hopes the new location will become a lasting home for both longtime fans and new visitors seeking a unique dining experience.
