Silver Spring, Md. – Law‑enforcement officials announced the arrest of Isaiah Armstrong Smith, a 23‑year‑old resident of Dallas, Texas, after he assaulted a Montgomery County police officer with a rifle during a stolen‑vehicle investigation.
Investigation began after stolen Corvette spotted
On Monday, Nov. 2, officers observed a Corvette traveling south on New Hampshire Avenue at about 10:45 p.m. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Anne Arundel County on Oct. 1. A police‑deployed drone captured the car parked in the 900 block of Hollywood Avenue in Silver Spring.
Two occupants exited the vehicle and entered a nearby home. When an officer in plain clothes approached the Corvette, Smith emerged from the residence carrying a rifle and struck the officer in the head with the firearm before fleeing the scene.
Rapid response leads to arrest
Additional officers arrived quickly. With assistance from a Prince George’s County helicopter and a K9 unit, Smith was located and taken into custody in the 900 block of Winhall Way. During the search, detectives recovered a privately manufactured AR‑style pistol that had been discarded in the 1000 block of Hollywood Avenue.
A 22‑year‑old Silver Spring resident believed to have been driving the stolen Corvette was also arrested at the Hollywood Avenue location. He was released pending further investigation.
Charges and court status
Smith now faces charges of assault on a police officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, and multiple firearm offenses. He is being held without bond. The local community praised the swift and coordinated response of Montgomery County law‑enforcement, emphasizing the importance of protecting officers and upholding public safety.
Authorities continue to investigate the theft of the Corvette and the origins of the privately manufactured firearm, urging anyone with additional information to contact the Montgomery County Police Department.
