Anchorage’s Dive Bar With a 70-Year Tab Still Running

The Gaslight Lounge has been open on Spenard Road since the 1950s, which means it survived the 1964 earthquake, the oil bust, and roughly a dozen cycles of Anchorage deciding Spenard was either charming or embarrassing. It’s still there. That’s the whole argument for the place.

Spenard Road, for the uninitiated, is Anchorage’s old strip — motels, tattoo shops, Thai restaurants, a recording studio, and the kind of bars that don’t bother with signage you’d notice from a moving car. The Gaslight sits on the east side of the road, easy to miss if you’re not looking, which is probably fine with the regulars. The exterior is low and dark. The interior is also low and dark. There is a neon sign. There is always a neon sign.

Inside, the bar runs along one wall, booths along the other. The stools are the kind that have been repaired multiple times without anyone pretending otherwise. Cash is preferred; the ATM in the corner exists for a reason. The jukebox is not ironic — it just has songs people actually want to hear at 10 p.m. on a Wednesday when their week hasn’t gone the way they planned.

The drinks are cheap by any standard and extremely cheap by Anchorage standards, which is saying something. A well cocktail runs you around five or six dollars. Beer on tap is local and cold. Nobody is going to garnish anything with a dehydrated citrus wheel. If you order a whiskey soda, you will receive a whiskey soda. The bartenders have been doing this long enough that they can tell in about thirty seconds whether you want to talk or be left alone, and they will respect that read either way.

There’s no kitchen. There’s no trivia night with a sponsored app. There’s no QR code menu. The Gaslight is a bar in the original sense of the word: a room where adults go to drink and talk and sometimes play pool without anyone trying to make it an experience. The pool table in the back gets serious use. If you challenge someone who looks comfortable back there, budget your pride accordingly.

The crowd skews local and multigenerational, which is rarer than it sounds. On any given night you’ll find tradespeople, musicians from the venue down the road, people who live in the neighborhood, and the occasional curious tourist who made a wrong turn and decided to stay. It mixes without drama. That’s partly the bar’s age — when a place has been around long enough, it stops attracting any single type.

Best time to go is a weeknight, when it’s quieter and the conversation carries. Weekends get loud and crowded, which is its own kind of fun but a different experience. Parking on Spenard is street parking; it’s usually fine. The bar is 21-plus, cash-friendly, and closes late.

The Gaslight isn’t trying to be anything. It has simply declined to stop existing, which after seventy-plus years on Spenard Road is its own form of stubbornness. Worth a visit if you want to drink somewhere that wasn’t designed for you to take a photo of it.
