UT Dallas Crow Museum receives $10 million gift and 4,000 new Asian art pieces

Richardson – The Crow Museum of Asian Art at the University of Texas at Dallas announced a transformative gift from longtime collector Barry L. MacLean. The donation includes more than 4,000 works spanning five millennia of Asian history and a $10 million endowment to fund preservation, care, and programming.

What the gift adds

The MacLean Collection features pottery, bronzes, sculptures and other artifacts from China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Indonesia. Roughly half of the pieces originate in China, with the remainder representing a broad geographic and chronological sweep from the Neolithic era to the present day.

Several items from the collection are already on display, including outdoor sculptures and a 2025 exhibit titled “Fire and Earth: Early Chinese Pottery from the MacLean Collection,” which showcased 45 ceramic vessels at the museum’s downtown Dallas location. Additional works will be installed at the UT Dallas campus beginning in 2027.

Why the museum welcomed the donation

“We have been very intentional about building a museum that reflects the depth and diversity of Asian art and its importance in our world,” said Amy Hofland, senior director of the Crow Museum. “This extraordinary gift brings us closer to that vision and gives us the opportunity to create something truly significant for generations to come.”

Richard Pegg, director and curator of Asian art for the collection, called the MacLean Collection “one of the great Asian art collections put together in the United States.” He noted that the collection will serve as a vital resource for scholars studying art, history, and culture at UT Dallas and beyond.

Educational impact

The endowment will support the museum’s preservation efforts and enable expanded programming for university and K‑12 classrooms. Hofland emphasized that each artifact carries a human story, offering students and community members a chance to learn about cultures different from their own.

“At the heart of our museum is the belief that the arts help us better understand one another,” she said. “With this collection, we can bring those stories into galleries, classrooms, and conversations throughout our community.”

Looking ahead

The donation also aligns with the university’s broader vision for the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum, a new arts and culture district that will house the Crow Museum and related facilities. As the museum prepares to integrate the new works, staff anticipate a series of exhibitions, lectures, and collaborative projects that will enrich the cultural landscape of the Dallas‑Richardson area.

Local residents, students, and visitors can look forward to a deeper engagement with Asian heritage, bolstered by the museum’s expanded collection and the financial stability provided by MacLean’s generous endowment.
