EVANSVILLE, Ind. – On Wednesday morning, volunteers from the local community joined Lowe’s Red Vest associates to begin a much‑needed renovation of The Arc of Evansville’s training kitchen and its adjacent outdoor learning center. The effort, part of a broader push to improve vocational‑training resources for residents, was made possible by a $75,000 grant from Lowe’s community‑impact program.
Renovation details
The training kitchen serves as a hands‑on classroom where participants learn to prepare nutritious meals, a skill set that supports both personal health and employability. Volunteers installed new countertops, upgraded cooking appliances, and refreshed the flooring to create a safer, more functional environment. Outside, crews tackled repairs to the Haynie’s Corner community pathway hub, including the installation of new garage doors that will protect equipment and improve accessibility.
Community impact
“The Lowe’s team has been absolutely great to work with. The funding actually will get us started on our project. It pretty much puts together our education spaces that we have. Without that funding, I don’t know that we would be able to do what we plan to do,” said Cinda Phillips, Chief Development Officer for The Arc of Evansville. Phillips added that the upgraded facilities will allow the organization to expand its cooking classes, reach more families, and provide a stronger foundation for job‑training programs.
Organizers emphasized that the renovations are not just about bricks and mortar; they are about expanding opportunities for community members to develop practical skills, build confidence, and foster healthier lifestyles. The new kitchen space will accommodate larger classes, enable more diverse menu planning, and support partnerships with local farms and food‑service businesses.
Lowe’s involvement
Lowe’s Red Vest associates, the company’s volunteer arm, have a long history of partnering with local nonprofits on projects that improve public spaces and support education. Their involvement in this renovation reflects a broader corporate commitment to community development in the Tri‑State area.
“We’re proud to support The Arc’s mission to empower residents through skill‑building,” said a Lowe’s spokesperson. “Investing in local training facilities aligns with our goal of helping families thrive.”
Looking ahead
The Arc of Evansville plans to use the newly renovated kitchen to launch additional nutrition workshops, culinary certifications, and after‑school programs. By providing a modern, well‑equipped space, the organization hopes to attract more participants and strengthen its role as a hub for community learning.
Community members are encouraged to stay involved, whether by volunteering future projects, donating supplies, or enrolling in upcoming cooking classes. The collaborative effort between volunteers, Lowe’s, and The Arc demonstrates how local partnerships can create lasting, positive change for families across Evansville.
