Texas Tech defense heads into West Virginia showdown with strong run game

When the Red Raiders take the field at home this Saturday, the biggest story for West Virginia fans will be Texas Tech’s defense. After a championship‑winning 2025 season that featured the nation’s top scoring defense, the Red Raiders remain a force against the run, even though they slipped to seventh in the Big 12 for overall points allowed.

Key players leading the charge

Senior defensive lineman A.J. Holmes Jr. returns for his final season after earning every major accolade in 2025. At 6‑foot‑3 and 300 pounds, Holmes leads the Big 12 in sacks and ranks among the top ten in tackles for loss. His presence on the line helps plug gaps and keep opposing rushers in check.

The secondary also features senior cornerback Brice Pollack, a first‑team All‑Big 12 selection last year, while linebackers Austin Romaine, Ben Roberts and John Curry add playmaking ability. Curry and Romaine each recorded two interceptions last season, both returned for touchdowns.

Coaching and scheme

Defensive coordinator Shiel Wood, now in his second year, has emphasized discipline and structural aggression. “You don’t see a lot of breakdowns from busted coverage or one‑on‑one mistakes,” said Texas Tech head coach Rodriguez. “They’re aggressive, but from a structural standpoint, very rarely do they have a bone‑head play.”

That philosophy has produced a defense that gives up under 95 rushing yards per game, the best mark in the conference. The unit’s ability to fill gaps and limit big runs will be a critical factor against the Mountaineers, who lead the Big 12 in rushing attempts.

West Virginia’s offensive challenge

West Virginia’s offense relies heavily on the ground game, ranking second nationally in total rushing attempts behind Air Force. Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. will need to lean on his running backs and manage the clock effectively to keep the Red Raiders’ front line off balance.

In a recent test, Arizona’s quarterback Noah Fifita threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns against Texas Tech, exposing a vulnerability in the pass defense, which now ranks second‑worst in the conference. However, most of those yards came from Fifita’s improvisational skill rather than systemic breakdowns.

What to watch

While Texas Tech’s pass defense has slipped, its run defense remains elite. West Virginia must execute disciplined blocking schemes and avoid predictable rushing patterns that could be exploited by Holmes and the defensive line. Conversely, the Red Raiders will look to pressure the Mountaineers’ quarterback and force turnovers, a strength highlighted by the interceptions returned for scores last season.

Rodriguez remains confident: “I think they got a system that they understand, and they’re coached well. The returning starters are all NFL‑caliber players, and we have the talent to challenge any offense.”

Game outlook

Both teams enter the matchup with high expectations. Texas Tech hopes to prove that its defense can still dominate despite losing several draft‑bound players, while West Virginia aims to leverage its powerful rushing attack to pull off a road upset. The contest promises a classic clash of a stout run defense against a run‑first offense, with the outcome likely hinging on which side can impose its will at the line of scrimmage.
