What Should You Order at Kewpee Hamburgers?

If you’ve never heard of Kewpee, the short answer is: it’s a regional burger chain that predates McDonald’s by about two decades and still operates a handful of locations in the Midwest, with Toledo holding three of them. The longer answer involves a small, squat building on Superior Street in central Toledo, a paper-hatted counter staff, and a burger that hasn’t changed appreciably since your grandparents were dating.

So what do you order? Start with the Hamburg. That’s what it says on the menu — not hamburger, Hamburg — and the patty is thin, pressed hard on a flat griddle, and served on a soft white bun with mustard, pickle, and onion by default. It costs around two dollars and change. You can add cheese for a little more. The temptation to load it up is real, but resist the first time. Eat it the way it comes and figure out what the fuss is about.

The olive burger is worth trying on a return visit. That sounds wrong — olives on a burger — but the chopped olive spread has been a Toledo thing for generations, and Kewpee is one of the standard-bearers. It’s tangy and briny in a way that works against the richness of the beef. It shouldn’t work. It does.

Fries here are thin and salty. The shakes are thick enough to require patience with a straw. The malts are better than the shakes, which is not a common opinion but is correct. Total damage for a burger, fries, and a drink runs somewhere between six and eight dollars, depending on how many sandwiches you talk yourself into. It is not difficult to talk yourself into two.

The Superior Street location — there’s also one on Laskey Road and one in the South Toledo area on Byrne Road — is probably the most convenient from downtown. The building is small. Seating is limited. At lunch on a weekday it moves fast; on weekends it fills up with a mix of regulars who’ve been coming for forty years and younger people who just figured out it existed. Neither group is wrong.

Kewpee is not a destination in the way that some places get labeled destinations. It doesn’t try to be. The lighting is flat, the booths are plain, there’s no ambient playlist or branded merchandise near the register. You order at the counter, they call your number, you sit down and eat a burger. The whole operation proceeds with a kind of cheerful efficiency that has apparently worked since 1923.

A few practical notes: cash is accepted and probably preferred for speed, though cards work fine. Parking is not dramatic — the lot is small but turnover is brisk. Hours are limited compared to chain competitors; they close mid-evening and are not open especially late. Check before you make a special trip after 8 p.m.

What makes it stand out is mostly what it hasn’t done. No pivot to smash burgers, no seasonal menu items, no rebranding. The Kewpee logo is a little doll figure that looks like it belongs in a 1940s cereal advertisement, and that is completely intentional. Toledo has a few places like this — things that survived long enough to become quietly irreplaceable. Kewpee is one of them.
