Democrats win every statewide office in Texas, reshaping San Antonio representation

San Antonio voters helped usher in a sweeping Democratic victory across Texas on Tuesday night. The party captured every statewide office, including the governor’s seat, and added two U.S. Senate seats, ending more than three decades of Republican dominance in the Lone Star State.

San Antonio ties to the new leadership

Although no San Antonio resident ran for statewide office, the winning candidates have deep local roots. Governor‑elect Gina Hinojosa, a Brownsville native whose mother lives in the King William neighborhood, and Senate candidate James Talarico, who taught at Jeremiah Rhodes Middle School on the West Side in 2011, both campaigned heavily in the city. Their victories were celebrated with Tejano music and enthusiastic crowds downtown.

Key congressional outcomes

Democrats held the newly created 35th Congressional District in San Antonio’s Southeast side, a district the GOP hoped would bolster its map‑making advantage. In the race to replace former Rep. Tony Gonzales, Democrat Katy Padilla Stout defeated gun‑focused YouTuber Brandon Herrera. Republicans added former MLB player Mark Teixeira, who won a seat previously held by Rep. Chip Roy, while Democratic candidates Henry Cuellar and Vicente Gonzalez were re‑elected.

Shifts in the Texas House

In the state legislature, Democrats made notable gains in Bexar County. They flipped two of the three Republican‑held House seats, with Kristian Carranza winning District 118 and first‑time candidate Zack Dunn unseating incumbent Rep. Marc LaHood in District 121—the first Democratic win there since 1981. A third GOP seat, District 122, remained too close to call as of early Wednesday morning.

Republican presence in San Antonio wanes

The results further reduced Republican representation in the city. Aside from the newly elected Rep. Mark Teixeira and state Sen. Donna Campbell, the GOP lost several incumbents, including Rep. John Lujan, former Rep. Tony Gonzales, and Rep. Chip Roy, who pursued an Attorney General bid. The San Antonio City Council retained two conservative members, but overall the party’s influence in the area appears diminished.

Local leadership changes

Former mayor Ron Nirenberg transitioned to county leadership, securing the Bexar County Judge seat after a term‑limited mayoral career. Commissioners Justin Rodriguez and Tommy Calvert were re‑elected comfortably. In the District Attorney’s office, Luz Elena Chapa won the Democratic primary and will take over from the progressive incumbent backed by George Soros in 2018.

Judicial race update

On the Fourth Court of Appeals, Republican incumbent Bert Richardson stepped down, and Democrat Antonia “Toni” Arteaga emerged as the leading candidate for chief justice, reflecting the broader partisan shift across the state’s elected positions.

These outcomes signal a dramatic realignment in Texas politics, with San Antonio playing a pivotal role in the Democratic surge.
