San Diego Election Central Returns: Democrats Win House Seats, Local Races Tight

San Diego brought back the beloved Election Central tradition at Golden Hall on Tuesday night, reuniting elected officials, reporters and civic volunteers to celebrate a semi‑functioning democracy. The gathering, halted by Covid in 2020, highlighted the community’s commitment to transparent elections and gave a local stage to the night’s results.

Congressional Outcomes

Every member of San Diego’s Democratic congressional delegation secured reelection, and the 48th District appears to have shifted from Republican to Democratic control. Rep. Scott Peters, newly returned from the 50th District, emphasized that the incoming Democratic majority will give Washington more leverage to address the war in Iran. He also urged that President Trump’s request for congressional authority to impose tariffs be revisited, arguing that restoring that power could help curb the affordability crisis facing American families.

Peters further noted that while a full Medicare‑for‑All system would be “hard to transition the whole economy to,” a public option, Medicare for children, or plans protecting families from catastrophic medical bills are worth exploring.

Key Local Races

48th Congressional District: Democrat Marni von Wilpert leads former Republican Rep. Darrell Issa’s successor, Jim Desmond, with a reported 59% to 41% margin as 73% of votes were counted. The district was redrawn last year with voter approval to favor Democrats, and Issa’s retirement opened the path for a potential flip.

District 2 City Council: Democrat Nicole Crosby holds a nine‑point advantage over former Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey, who now runs as an independent. Bailey lamented that labor unions dominate City Hall and warned of continued policy stagnation without a leadership change.

District 4 City Council: The race between incumbent Henry Foster and community activist Martha Abraham remains tight. Early counts show Abraham ahead by roughly 700 votes, a lead that has grown to just under 1,200 votes, suggesting a possible upset.

District 6 City Council: Incumbent Democrat Kent Lee appears headed for a comfortable second term, while Republican challenger Mark Powell trails with just over 40% of the vote.

District 8 City Council: Democrats Antonio Martinez and Gerardo Ramirez are vying for the seat covering Barrio Logan, Logan Heights, Nestor and San Ysidro. Martinez leads by more than 1,700 votes, a gap that widens with each update. He stressed the need for greater community input at City Hall.

County Measures and Recall Effort

Measure A, a county‑government reform proposal, is poised at a razor‑thin margin—ahead by roughly 18,000 votes but only at 51% support. If passed, it would give supervisors greater sway over daily operations and allow a third term.

Measure B, a half‑cent sales‑tax initiative, also sits at about 51% support. Approval would fund health care, Tijuana River sewage solutions, child‑care and public safety.

Mayor Todd Gloria, though not up for reelection, faces a recall petition launched by attorney Geneviéve Jones‑Wright, alleging a loss of confidence in his competence and leadership. The notice must be served by Nov. 8, with signature gathering slated to begin late November.

Other County Results

Democratic County Treasurer‑Tax Collector Larry Cohen leads with roughly 60% of the vote, while Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe and Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Jordan Marks have also secured early victories. South County mayoral races remain unpredictable, delivering potential wins for a Democrat, a Republican and a conservative‑leaning independent.

Overall, San Diego’s Election Central showcased a community eager to participate, while the results underscore both Democratic gains at the federal level and fiercely contested local battles that will shape the city’s future.
