City officials in Palm Bay confirmed two storm‑related deaths after historic flooding inundated the area on Monday, a development that directly impacts commuters, families and businesses throughout the Orlando metropolitan region.
The victims were identified as 34‑year‑old Joshua Bennett and 78‑year‑old Archie Richards, who were not related. According to WESH, Bennett died when rising river water trapped his car on San Filippo Drive, submerging him inside the vehicle. Richards was found dead inside his car on Richards Lane and Hall Road, prompting a Silver Alert that was issued the same day.
Palm Bay Mayor Rob Medina announced that the city recorded 20 inches of rain over the previous 14 hours and issued a shelter‑in‑place advisory that remained in effect from Monday through Tuesday, urging residents to stay off the roads and remain indoors if possible.
The Palm Bay Police Department said it is collaborating with Palm Bay Fire Rescue and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to respond to emergency calls as quickly as possible. The flooding forced school closures, caused road washouts, and led to power outages throughout the city, prompting officials to advise the public that water levels are “much higher than they may appear.”
Mayor Medina expressed his condolences, saying, “Everyone that has been texting me… each and every one of you sending me emails that you are praying for our city, pray for peace and comfort over the Bennett and Richards family.”
City officials will continue to monitor water levels and assess damage in the coming days. Residents are asked to remain indoors, avoid travel on flooded roads, and stay tuned for further updates from the Palm Bay emergency management team.
