Travelers Rest Opens New Outdoor Fitness Court Funded by Greenville Health Authority

Travelers Rest celebrated the dedication of a brand‑new outdoor fitness court on Nov. 3, placing the facility on Center Street beside the Sargent Branch of the Greenville County Library. The court offers a range of equipment—including dumbbells, cable machines, a leg press and an elliptical—to give residents a convenient place to exercise outdoors.

Funding and Community Impact

The project was made possible by a $249,723 grant from the Greenville Health Authority (GHA) through its 2025 Healthy Greenville program. GHA’s mission is to improve access to quality health care across the Upstate and to strengthen resident well‑being through partnerships with health systems and community groups. “The Greenville Health Authority’s generous investment made the fitness court possible, and we are grateful for its commitment to the health and well‑being of our community,” said Mayor Brandy Amidon. “The court gives residents and visitors a welcoming place to move, connect and enjoy the outdoors. We are proud to celebrate this addition to Travelers Rest together.”

Each workout station includes a QR code that links to an instructional video, helping users of all skill levels learn proper technique and maximize the benefits of the equipment.

Early Usage Shows Strong Interest

Since opening in July, the court has attracted roughly 700 users. City Administrator Shannon Herman reported a 500% increase in the number of people staying at the court for more than 30 minutes, indicating that the facility is encouraging longer, more active sessions. “We’re seeing an investment in an active lifestyle,” Herman said. “It’s here, it’s in front of you.”

The court’s location next to the library creates a natural hub for learning, recreation, and community interaction, aligning with Travelers Rest’s broader goals of fostering healthy, connected neighborhoods.

Looking Ahead

Local officials hope the fitness court will inspire additional health‑focused projects and encourage residents to adopt regular physical activity as part of their daily routine. The Greenville Health Authority plans to continue supporting similar initiatives that promote wellness across the region.
