Residents living along Rice Road, just over a mile from the Rowan County landfill, have been told to expect stronger odors for the next three to four weeks. Rumpke, which purchased the landfill in February, says the temporary increase is a by‑product of work on the site’s gas‑collection infrastructure.
Why the work is needed
According to Communications Manager Kevin Hall, the project expands the pipeline network that feeds the landfill’s gas‑to‑energy system, which captures methane produced by waste decomposition. Hall explained that improving the gas‑collection system is a core part of Rumpke’s early‑stage priorities, aimed at reducing community complaints and eventually making the facility “invisible” at the property line – no noise, no sight, and no smell.
What neighbors are saying
Long‑time resident Josh McBride, who has lived in the area for eight years, said he notices the odor as soon as he pulls into his driveway. “You just kind of get out of your car when you get home and just, oh,” he said. McBride added that a three‑to‑four‑week period of stronger smells is tolerable, but a permanent increase would be problematic.
Greg Blackburn, a four‑year resident, described the current smell as “real pungent.” He expressed hope that the work will make a noticeable difference. “I just hope whatever they do stops the odor. That would be great,” Blackburn said.
Company’s long‑term goal
Hall emphasized that the current work is a short‑term issue aimed at a lasting solution. “We want to be invisible at the property line, meaning that we don’t want you to hear us, see us, or smell us,” he said. The company expects the construction to wrap up within three to four weeks, after which odors should return to their usual, lower level.
How to get more information
Residents with questions can call Rumpke’s toll‑free line at (800) 828‑8171 or contact the Morehead office. The company encourages community members to reach out if they experience any concerns during the work period.
